around town almost al-most any n gut between the hours of 8 and 10 one ia struck not favorably by any means with the number boys seen playing and roaming about the streets many of whom are so young as to appear to have but shortly jumped out of their skirts It is not an un trequent occurrence to see as many as ten or fifteen in a crowd out in the middle of the highway hooting and yelling like so many demons just set free and making the dust fly in disagreeable dis-agreeable and suffocating clouds A fractious horse is often nipted to mate a bolt for liberty cm tuddeuly turning a corner and coming upon one of tbese scenes A person not initiated glances at this peculiar spectacle won d ring if the cloud of dust envelopes a dog fight a bull fight the crater of a volcano which has just visitors Deputies Steele and Whetstone made four arrests last Wednesday Paterson Jrlffiths and Thomas Druce both of Hyde Park were roped in on the prevailing pre-vailing charge the former was bound over and the latter taken to Ogden there haying been an indictment found against him Niels Mickelson was also caught up und landed in the Commissioners Commis-sioners office where he was b > und over Marrin Stark of Brigham City was arrested by the same officers for obtaining money under false pretenses the complaint having been made by Niel Bell a person who has figured very extensively in our police court for such petty offenses as stealing inebriety and profanity After having a hearing before United States Attorney Attor-ney Goodwin Mr Stark was discharged dis-charged Now that the long wintry nights are approaching the reading room which has been closed since last spring should be reopened This place was well patronized last winter the stock of books selected from those of the best authors and the leading Territorial papers magazines etc attracting general attention A debating society held weekly meetings in the readin groom g-room which called forth large and appreciative ap-preciative audiences Our eloquent young men should whooper up again right away Just think of it we are soon to be favored with a drama by our local company com-pany which bobs up presents some startling drama then passes into oblivion obli-vion perhaps for months at a stretch then up it pops again A good organization organiza-tion could make money by placing on the boards aa interesting comedy or melodrama regularly this winter say semimonthly or every three weeks MILES LOGAN Utah October 24 1887 A FEW days ago a very disgraceful disturbance occurred at Smithfield It Happened on Sunday and the following i Monday night and the participants were a crowd of hoodlums There resides re-sides in Smithfield a quiet and inoffensive inoffen-sive gentleman named G W Gustafsen On the nights above referred to these roughs went td Mr Gustafsens house and engaged in various exploits of a disgraceful nature They shot Mr Gs dog shot through one of the doors of his house threw rocks at the house and otherwise disturbed the quiet of the neighborhood Not content with carrying r car-rying on in this manner they did not leave his premises without stealing a dun and several skins from his prem Ises It is to be hoped that those guilty will be punished to the fell extent tent of the law JOHN BAEBEK of Logan was before Commissioner Goodwin yesterday The charge against him was unlawful cohabitation Mary Petersen was examined I ex-amined as a witness but there being no i evidence the cssewas postponed until Monday next at 2 pm Mr Barber was placed under bonds in the sum oi 1000 Scanty CBOOKSTOH yesterday sent a box of Cache County products to the PrOTO fair which commences on Tues day The box contained somemam moth specimens of onions potatoes and carrots which it would benard to beat anywhere OH SUNDAY evening last Mads Chris tiansen of Trenton was arrested by Deputy Marshals Steele and Whetstone He was allowed freedom on his own recognizance to appear at Commissioner Goodwins residence on Monday for examination ex-amination On Monday ho came before the Commissioner and was bound over on a charge of unlawful cohabitation IE tho sum of 1000 to await the action of the grand jury Hannah Christiansen who is said to be the second wife was bound over to appear when wanted asa as-a witness OH SUNDAY Deputy Marshals Steele and Whetstone accompanied by Commissioner Com-missioner Goodwin went to Newton and made a raid upon a number of houses there They arrested John Jenkins Jen-kins on an indictment and placed him junder bonds to appear in Logan on Tuesday ready to gu to Ogden Mr Jenkins made his appearance on Tuesday Tues-day and was taken to Ogden He is indicted in-dicted we understand for unlawful cohabitation co-habitation ON 11O DAY evening Peter Benson of Newton was arrested on the unlawful cohabitation chatgf He was bound over to appear at the commissioners office in Lo au on Tuesda for examination exami-nation The bonds were placed at 1 000 Christina Nielson was bound over to appear ap-pear as a witness LAST EVENING William McNeil of Logan was arrested on the charge of unlawful cohabitation He was before the Com mi siouer and gave bonds for his appearance before the Commissioner Commis-sioner at 2 pm on Due day next for nn examination uTwl |
