Mall service will prove n most signal success is beyond all question Soon after THE HERALD Is printed this momins letters and papers which left New York at S oclock on Thursday night will have reached the business houses and residences In San FranCisco Fran-Cisco Upon tho invitation of Assistant General Freight and Passenger Agent Parker representatives represen-tatives of THE HERALD limes News and Trib tine left this city Sunday morning at 820 with the intention of meeting the Fast Mall at Green River Elegant accommodations had been provided pro-vided for the party In the shape of Gneral Manager Cummings private car 00 which had been fully stocked for tho trip At Ogden the Salt Lakers were met by representatives ol the Standard and Commercial A delay of halt an hour or more was occasioned at this point owing to heavy travel which necessitated the bending out of the eastbound express in two fcections each one of which tested the capacity of the powerful engines The special car ft tj was attached to the rear end of the last section going out and in a few minutes after leavius the station the party was enjoying the grandeur of Weber cafion then the Echo and later on the sagebrush deserts of Wyoming caused a stream of comparisons with the fertile valleys of Utah The run to Green River was made without any particular incident The heavy freight traftlc was noticeable however In the fact that be twuen Salt Lake and Green River no less than seven very heavy freight trains wero encountered encoun-tered all westbound Mr Parker says never before In the history of the Union Pacific has freight and passenger traffic been so heavy as In the year 1SS9 and particularly during the last few months The road is really taxed to in fullest capacity THE FAST MAIL TRA1X was duo In Green River at 703 pm but owing to a hot box on the engine a delay of twenty minutes was occasioned at Rock Springs and the timo was not made up between the two points Owing to some misunderstanding another an-other delay was occasioned at Green River sc that the train pulled out of that station 111 tytwc minutes behind time It was hoped however that this would bo made up before Ogden was reached Another loss of eight minutes wa made in gaining the top of the hill thus throwIng throw-Ing the train one hour behind at Piedmont A sort of hopeless dispair then seized upon the company as it became evident that the Union Pacific would not be able to turn over the train to the Central Pacific on time However a determined de-termined effort was made to do so and from that point on there was a race against time which has never been paralleled in the previous history of the Union Pacillc The three miles between Tapioca and Aspen wero covered in two minutes and those aboard made to realize for once in their lives If never before just j what t fast time mrant At Evanston there was a SlOp 01 a few minutes to test the wheels and trans icr the mails and then with a fresh engineer at the throttle commenced OSB Or TIlt FASTEST VISItS known in the history of the road and which caused old railway men who had many times flown along at tho rate of sixty miles an hour to almost hold their breath In anticipation ol what was coming next The car occupiel by the press representatives was originally on the rear end of the train but at Green River the palace on wheels of Marvin Huirhltt president of the Northwestern and which was used by General Manager Dickinson and party occupied the position of honor Turnln one of the curves in the cafion a pleasan little poker party was brought to a rather abrupt termination as the table and those surrounding it were badly mixed together More than one face blanched and one member of the party became deathly sick as tho train sped on its mad career Just what were the exact impressions of those who I were lortunate enough to be awake must bo left I to be recorded in the future Each minute J seemed to Increase the speed at which the 1 I cafions of Echo and Weber were being descended de-scended Bridges flew from under the wheels with a momentary swish and the tunnel seemed to be but a few feet in length so quicklj were they passed through Still on the train dashed and its scream at approaching stations brought the inhahitants to the doors and win hews only to see the smoking demon vanishing in the distance WIIEX ECnO WAS HEACITED it became evident that the train would not be In Ogden on time but a grim determination seemed 10 possess tha party not to he any later than was compatible with absolute safety The throttle was opened wide again and on sped the Fast Mail the shriek of the whistle echoing and rjvcrbcratinsj among the hills and the lights I dancing over the dark sides of the cation wall here and there glitering on a patch of suow I Fortytwo minutes were made up in the run between be-tween Evanston and Ogden when this is stated I but little more need be said of the time that was a necessary result The transfer was made at I Ogden anil at 140 I the Fast Mail pulled out for the coast It will reach San Franclsso this morning at 943 TilE PARTY ACCOMPASVIHC Accompanying conversation with rIle JUmALus representative He was more than pleased with the initial trip and was sure the people of t ie great west would appreciate tho service that was about to bo extended to them The oatire country west of Omaha had been ho said really entitled to a better mall service for years andthe railway mail service had been en deaYoring for some time past to effect what has now been accomplished Tho present agreement agree-ment with the railway companies is for tour years so that there Is no danger of the Fast Mull being a momentary experiment ThiS train he aid left New York on Thursday evening atJ oclock and flew out of the Chicago depot at tl am on Friday ATe passed through Omaha on schedule time ct 615 1 Saturday evening We shall reach San Francisco at Q15 on Tuesday Our presence on the train is due to the fact that wo were anxious to test the practical workings of the new and important undertaking and so far I am more than pleased If however we sec that any chances can be made by which the service can be bettered we shall of course have them made This Is considered con-sidered one of the biggest things the country has ever seen and when the system gets down to smooth running order the western people will begin to appreciate its Importance Twentyfive tons of Ylre were distributed between Omaha und Cheyenne and thirteen tons came out of Omaha There will be a big increase of course within a few days and it would not surprise me If wIthin the next few months solid mail trains wexo run from ocean to ocean CAUGHT ON THE FLY New York papers of
