afternoon last was a large one and those present listened with much Interest to the sneaker Elder McMur rin The singing by the choir and congregation con-gregation of the first hymn brought recollections re-collections of incidents and meetings in bygone days in their native lands to many who had gathered from abroad it being an oldtime favorite especially In the British Isles It was When first the glorious light of truth Burst faIth ia this last age HOWH I tr were vun neart and soul T obey it did engage Prayer by Elder Lerenzo D Young Singing by the choir of O mv Father thou that dwellest In the hten and elorlous placol When shall I regain thy presence And again behold thy lace ELDEB JAMES McMuEKiN arose with peculiar pe-culiar feelings to speak of theprmcJples of everlasting life and requested the aid of the prayers and faith of the Saints The principles of the gospel ire such as to demand the attention of the world God had revealed a plan whereby His children may advance step by step until they regain His presence The Almighty revealed the jospel for the benefit of every eon and daughter of Adam If they will obey its principles tlie first ones they will be blessed with a testimony of its truth Faith was the first principle he said and explained the necessity of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ reciting rhe acton ac-ton of the Saints in the days of Jesus In these days the sects of the world taught that belief alone was all that was necessary to be saved The Latterday Saints thought that there were otber requisites re-quisites to obtain eternal life among wuicn were constant and honest labor in the cause of truth The people would have known little of God and the things pertaining to eternal life if the Almighty had not from tme to time revealed re-vealed Himself Faith was awakened in the hearts of the people by hearing the principles of the gospel preached by the elders When they heard them a curiosity was awakened and they investigated in-vestigated further Tne Bible does not teach that but a few will be saved the gospel and plan of salvation was for all mankind When an individual obeyed the gospel the Lord gave them a testimony testi-mony The honest in heart in all the world would hear the truth All mankind man-kind would hear the principles of the gospel and after they had obeyed its requirements they were required to remain re-main faithful in order to secure the olessings promised to those who obeyed faith and works are necessary Elder McMurrin said and supported his statement state-ment by an apt illustration The bless ines of the Lord were obtained through faithfulness There were other requi sites necessary to salvation in addition to faith Repentance follows and is the next step in the perfect plan of salvation salva-tion ana as repentance followed faith baptism followed repentance The Savior taught thesefirsipnuciples and He had a right to teach them inasmuch as He yielded obedience to them Himself He was baptized of John in the Jordan for thus it becometh us the Savior said to fulfil all righteousness n Would Jesus have submitted to this ordinance if it were not necessary to salvation Nay verily If it was necessary for the Son of God to go down into the waters of baptism how much more so was it necessary for humanity If Christ were on earth now he would not preach different doctrines from those le preached when among men 1KX years ago The Savior commissioned certain ones when he left them to go forth to preach the gospel and they were consistent in regard to the first principles When a persi n was converted con-verted to the existence of the Godhead they sought the mind and will of that Godheud Peter taught those who desired sired to know what to do to be saved Repent and be baptized every one of you Jesus gave unto Peter the keys of the kingdom and he stood at tie bead He had an excellent opportunity opportun-ity at that memorable time to tell the people to believe in the Lord + Jesus Christ and that alone would save them but instead he told them to repent und be baptized This was a testimony o the world of the necessity for the third princip e b iptism J he teachings ot one apostle were the same astnose taught by the others Paul in the sixth Hebrews spoke similarly in regard to the first principles and in regard to baptism by immersion He in the fifth chapter of Romans laid down a mode by which burying in the water was taught The idea of being baptized in any manner the subject elected to have performed per-formed was an incorrect one The Savor Sav-or said on one occasion Except a man is born ot water and of the spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of leaven These were the words of Jesus 1800 years ago and were not the emanation of any Latterday Saints brain in these days Elder McMurriu related a incident of his experience in Ireland in relation to an argument he overheard in which this doctrine of baptism was discussed and the changing of the wording of the Scriptures advocated by one The other remarked thai if the wording was altered we might as well substitute potatoes for bread in the Sacrament of the Lords Supper and buttermilk for Wine and then they would have buttermilk butter-milk and potatoes He continued his I remarks and illnstrated the necessity of the layu g on of hands for the reception of the Holy Ghost Why did the apostles journey to Samaria in order to pray for the people ttere if it vas simply necessary to believe in order to be saved and lay their hands on them for the gift of the Holy Ghost The people had not only believed but had been bap ized yet Dad not received the Holy Ghost These teaching were not new they were taugh by Jesus and His ciciples and they were all essential to Salvation Tha ha nts were accused of no believing in the Scriptures but in the Book ofMormon and Joseph Smith This accusation was groundless The g epf1 of thiSbmgdom which Christ said should be preached to all the world as a witness before the end should come was heirs heralded abroad by the Latter day Saints in these days and instead of this being an age when the manifestations manifesta-tions of the Spirit and power of the Lord should not be shown it was exactly the reverse The speaker testified testi-fied that if people would obey the teachings of the Holy Ghost they would learn of the truth of the gospel for themselves The work would go on until the true position of the Saints would stand gloriously before the world it would be known that they had been lied about and misrepresented The kingdom would never more be taken f from the earth the truth would never be destroyed it had in it the elements of eternal life It will go on be said and all having a desire to join it will hav the trivilege He exhorted all Saints to purify themselves and put all opposed to truth beneath their feet The sinner could not continue in his sins and see God Let us then as men ad women and brothers and sisters instead in-stead ofgrasptua after the things of the world try to live according to the principles of the gospel there was no joy or satisfaction as great al that which came from a sense of having done a duty Elder Lambert announced the continuance con-tinuance of the Young Mens Mutual Improvement Association Conference at 7 p m in the Tabernacle The choir sang the anthem Praise the Lord and benediction was pronounced pro-nounced by Elder W T Jack |
