Show THC QUESTiON of a state constitutional convention the central motive of which is to be the negro question is being again agitated in Mississippi The motion to call such convention was defeated at the last session of the legislature but agitation of the question is now going on with a view of compelling the legislature at its next session ses-sion to call such a convention One of the leading papers of that state said when the question was up before the last legislature and the opinions are now reiterated The question is not one of comparative illiteracy of ignorance against knowledge it is a question of race Were every negro a graduate of Yale and every white man in the south unread unlearned the same thing would occur The whites would control con-trol The same paper says the two races cannot exist together as equals one must rule the other The sentiment seems to be white supremacy at any cost and at all hazards haz-ards The object of the convention would be to propose such an amendment to the constitution so regulating the franchise as to give the control of the state forever to the whites The complications that are likely to arise from such an attempt promise prom-ise to he both lively and perplexing |
