| Show Politics in Provo Paovo July 30th 1888 To the Editor of the THE HBBAUJ The psople of the Garden City appear to take more interost in political mat tore than ever before so mach so that a stranger coming into our city at the present time would be justified in regarding re-garding us as a community of radical politicians Only a few week ago there were some delegates sent to represent rep-resent the Democrats of Utah County in the Ogden convention where they i found a local postmaster a deputy attorney I at-torney and a few others who claimed to i be all the Democrats there were and refused to recognize the delegates that I Dad been duly elected These delegates returned and organized the Utah County Democratic Club and adopted u ulatforiu oi principles the fourth and fifth Factions of which read as follows 4Tbe enforcement of all valid laws and upon the question of tho validity of any law the decision of tho court of last report is final and should be accepted I ac-cepted in good faith until by legitimate agitation if obncxious or unjust its abrogation or repeal can be secured I Equal and exact justice to all men of whatever state religious or political Freedom of religion of the press and ot the person under the protection ot the law and of an enlightened public opinion Absolute separation of church and state the safety and wellbeing of each demanding that neither in it > organized capacity should in any manner interfere inter-fere with tne other Believing that the true spirit of our free institutions and the powers reserved re-served to the States and to the people were wisely intcaded to and justly do secure to allAmeiicancitizens the right of local selfgovernment we recognize that for the purpose of exercising tnat right and performing that duty every citizen ought to b sufficiently independent inde-pendent that he will at nil tines exercise exer-cise his own best individual judgment in performing all cf his political privileges nd duties And we further decare it to be our firm belief that it is diametrically opposed op-posed to the principals oi free government govern-ment for any citizen to yield to any manor man-or set of men the riafat to control bib political action and that in doing to he does an injustice to himself to his country and to civilization And while we strongly insist upon the right to enjoy tho benefits of local selfgovern ment we believe it to be impossible that this right can bs well exercised or these benefits fully enjoyed by any community commun-ity where the many are controlled by tho will of the few or to whatever party thut few may belong 5 We bpJicve that no man can be 1 consistent Democrat and at the same time affiliate tram or vote with any other political party local or national I when there are regular nominees of tho Democratic party in the field I Since the Utah County Democratic Club has published its pll ttform of principles prin-ciples and members of th club have refused to accept of nomination for office upon any other platform tho aforesaid deputy attorney postmaster etc appear to be very much interested and have organized n rival club seemingly seem-ingly with a view to induce the county organization to violate the fifth section of its platform On Saturday night Daniel Evans James G Kencey Thomas Beesley and six others met in the Courthouse and organized what they christened The Democratic Club of Timpauoga with one president six vicepretidents secretaries ec The business transacted trans-acted was the appointment of n com niuteo to confer wiili the Utah County Democratic Club with I view to fusing to report at an adjourned meeting to I be held on Tuesday night July 31t the object being ostensibly to place 1 Democratic ticket in the field to be voted for at the coming election though the real object was plainly indicated and cannot be regarded re-garded as anything but a bold attempt to induce individual members of the Utah Count Democratic Club to vie late section five of their own platform I the Tirapaaogoa had adopted Jane ratified the platform and then organized organ-ized as a branch and then given the county club time in which to hold a meeting there would be no trouble about their gaining recognition and there are certainly Democrats enough in the county to justify the placing of a regular ticket in the held The name Timpanogos is good enough it being tho name of the ecclesiastical ward wart presided over by Bishop Wentz and was the Indian name for Provo River The livar is about dry though i is toped the Timpanogos Club will flourish and that the Democrats of Utah County |
