| Show THE CITY SAIL Prospects for Adverse Committee i Commit-tee Report A couple of weeks ago the committee on city prisonreported to the City Council thu urgent necessity of some steps being taken looking to a relict from the overcrowded condition of the city jail which was represented as being really unfit for the purposes for which it was used that it was very insufficiently insuf-ficiently ventilated that there was suci luck of circulation of air that however how-ever clean the prison might be kept the confining of a few dirty me makes the air so foul that it cannot fail to be unhealthy that such a condition cauuo conduce to tho moral wellbeing of the prisoners who are doub less affected more or less by their surroundings They therefore feel compelled to report re-port that the city prison lain no ro spect good and in some positively had for its purpose and thought that this condition should be remedied as anon as possible They were advised the committee said that with proper changes the present building could b made available and suggested that an addition might be added on the west that should have an ornamenal front towards First East Street liumedmtt > action was necessary they thought and should at once be taken On this bam presented to the Council action was deterred for one week Last week however the document was not called up and now it is hinted that the report re-port and recommendations of the committee com-mittee will bo witlulniwu This action will be tafcen it ia said because of the recent arrangement with the county whereby the new jail will be used for confining certain city prisoners and thna relieve the pressure on the walls of the old baatile 1 am in favor said one member of the City Council but alas I he is only oncof building a city jail with a capacity for 150 as 1 believe there are at least si 100 person roaming the streets now whom the city should take in and do for |
