Show ON WOMAN SUFFRAGE The Interesting Lectures Te livered at the Theatre MRS SAXON AND MRS COLBY Victories Won by Women A Test Case This Fall Mrs Saxon on Temperance The announcement that Mrs Elizabeth Eliza-beth Lisle Saxon and Mrs Clara B Colby would speak at the Theatre on Sunday evening attracted an audience which comfortably filled the parquette and first circle and fully two thirds of those present were ladies Mrs Saxon one of the vicepresi dents of the National Womans Suffrage Association was introduced by Dr S B Young and announced that she would speak upon The Progress of Woman ihrouguout the Ages She said that on look ng over the history his-tory of nations and seeking the cause for their decay it was apparent that it was to be found in the false education that curbs the Godgiven faculties of one of the sexes Our own nation would be no exception to the rule unless the danger was overcome To say that woman v a i unfit to occupy any sphere but that o a men al was contradicted by the acts of history whenever her talents nad an opportunity to shine There were brilliant examples of what woman could do in the few that had been permitted to come to the front in the ages as queens and as instructors of the people Due of the reasons why she was not in a more advanced position today was the lack of organization organiza-tion and united effort for her proper education This organization was te ine effected and during the last fifty vears much has been done toward opening the way for her to receive an education such as she was entitled to because of her natural endowments History records that woman has fnr nisned her full proportion of martyrs in the cause of human advancement in all the centuries The maternal element ele-ment is strongest in truly great women who are the mohers of the people These are found in the foremost ranks in encouraging the good and tho true Every advance woman has made has been fought by the professed Christian church but despite this opposition the evolution that has been in progres has been breaking the shackles that have pound her Time was in some countries when a husband could use his wife as he chose or even kill her and he was not questioned ques-tioned But that day has gone by and womans enfranchisement has been steadily going oc In the disenthrall ment of the slave she took an important import-ant part The speaker reviewed this work from the time that the lady delegates del-egates from America to tho antislavery antislav-ery convention in England were refused re-fused a seat in that convention because of prejudice to the holding of the womans convention in Seneca Falls N Yto protest against the oppression oppres-sion of the gentler tex She also spoke of the labors of the womans convention conven-tion and tho high moral courage ox hib ted by those swbo pioneered the way into the medical profession and opened the way to a better education for women She said the days may go wrong but the ages are summed upright up-right With the advancement of science the labors devolving upon Woman are obanging She does not now have to weave and spin and engage in similar labors l therefore new fields must opened to her in connection with her domes ic duties Is it not possible far woman to take another step forward She has been held back doubtless for a wise purpose pur-pose but now she is called into the wider arena Man has fought the physical tight but woman is now wanted in the spiritual warfare to bring the complete victory when both wi 1 ha united in acompanionship that places no chains to bold one in subjection jection None of us live or die to ours our-S lves our good or our evil example extends to those around us In America Amer-ica today we are traveling in the same path in which home trod We hae our elections as they did brilliant bril-liant men are at the front of them corruption cor-ruption finds its homo in high places now as it did in Rome Will we not profit by the ominions warning The Roman women became powerless before be-fore the licentiousness of the men and destruction came swiftly Now we have the same conditions and unless we arouse the same disaster will follow fol-low We have the power to change the course and let us do so We have educated women to aid in the struggle for a purity of national life and that is the redeeming feature We are living liv-ing at a time when humanity must arise for the divine struggle Woman must bear her part which is not that of a child or of a toy but of a noble daughter of God Mis Saxon closed by reciting The Good Time Now Mrs Colby was then introduced by Charles W Stayner She said that man and woman were given dominion jointly over the earth and the latter was just entering upon her proper sphere Mrs Colby took up the law as promulgated by the Savior where he declared that woman should be protected even from unholy desires and spoke at some length noon the command The volume of evil must be overcome and the law ot Christ conformed with or trouble Is sure to come The good can only be maintained in our nation by united efforbin com batting the evil To this great end all should labor and man should not fear that woman will do too much iu the glorious work She had been asked to so little in the past bat should now be I given ample opportunity to work for good LAST NIGHTS LECIOBES Another fairsized audience assembled assem-bled at the Theatre last evening and as before the laoies largely predominated The first speaker was Mrs Colby who was introduced by Mr B F Cam mmgs She said that her friend Mrs Saxon and herself had been making a trip to the coast particularly through Washington Territory where the question ques-tion of womans suffrage had become an important one Recently a Mrs Bloomer of Spokane Falls had Ler vote refused The case was cirred into the courts It then came to light that both the plaintiffand djfendanc were conspiring to defeat woman suffrage for which reason the supporters of the cause had made no e fort to fight the case but it was proposed pro-posed tot make a genuine test case in that Territory this fall The point upon which an adverse decision hid been made in that Territory was that the term citizens did not include women and yet Congress admitting dele a es from Terntorl been elected partally by the vote of women wonln sefm to Imve sustained the rignt of wont n to vot At the time when the disfranchisement disfranchise-ment of women in Utah was under consideration con-sideration she baa done what she could to prevent it and told those interested in the movement that if the women of Utah were disfranchised for a mere belief be-lief it would prove a most dangerous precedent to establish She was sorry to find that the fundamental principles of our government had not a firmer hold upon the people Various propositions regarding the elegibility of voters were being proposed It seemed to be the desire to restrict suffrage instead o extending ex-tending but the moment we take away the ballot we take away the greatest incentive to become good citizens The question was not now as to whether the women could keep up with the men but whether the men could keep up with the women Every advantage possessed by woman today had been won by her own efforts Her subjection had been the curse of the race Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness were inherent tights and they could only bi protected by the ballot bal-lot Under certain circumstances a woman was forced to use the weapon of barbarism to protect her home or her honor and her act was approved Was it not illogical to refuse to allow her to use for the same purpose the weapon of civilization the ballot Much had been said about the evil in the world which expressed itself through the ballot box was it not right to combat the evil with the good If all the good in the world coula find ex presaion there need be no fear of the evil The speaker was strongly in favor of compulsory education as one of the ways tnrongh which the ballot box would be purified She was also in favor of coeducation The association of the sexes would result in mutual benefit One of the great bugbears brought against women being allowed to take part in the government of their country was that they did not know enough to vote but the fallacy of this fU d tf the idea that men were the su ieri is of women intellectually had been shown conclusively by Mrs Gardner Gard-ner of New York Mans strength and womans sympathy sym-pathy should be united for the good of the race Mos SAXON was then introduced and said that the boon ot suffage had been given one year and taken away the next and it was the liquor traffic of America which had deprived them of this right bbe stated that in a certain town in Tennessee where she was engaged intemperance in-temperance work almost svery business busi-ness man in the town had expressed ex-pressed Himself privately as sympathizing sym-pathizing with her but not one of them dared to come oit rod taBea stand for temperance the liquor traffic seemed to control every interest of the country But the cause was triumphing The truth wore no mask and only waited for a hearing The great tidal wava of reform was sweeping over the land and the sentiment senti-ment of the yeople was wrought up to a white heat The brewers began using their power in politics in 1S65 and had ever since opposed prohibition at the polls and temperance at their councils It was on such vital questions as the licensing of saloons that the power of woman would be felt at the ballot box There was a time when the dram shops ware all that was vile and infamousand then mothers were able to keep their sons away from them but now they were transformed into palaces The women had petitioned legislative bodies in vain for they were opposed by the liquor influence in-fluence It would continue so until woman held in her weak hands the ballot The Womans Christian Temperance Union was the most perfect organization organiza-tion in the United States today and had for its leader one of the most clear sighted and allcomprehensive minds in the country This society was the outgrowth of their falure to obtain aid from the legislature and women were praying in the madness of misery for their sons who were going to de sruction Two incidents in American history paralellea the miracles of the Biblethe emancipation of the slaves and the inauguration of the temperance crusade in Ohio Women were just as tigerish iu their love for their young as the wild beast but experience had taught them that it was a moral battle they must wage Referring to the Order of the White Cross she complimented the young men of this country for the stand they had taken for morality and considered it a most encouraging sign She had been shocked and paint tore to-re d in a newspaper that all that was needed to breas npIMormonsm was the brothel and tne dram shop At the Battle of Waterloo the Home Guards were ordered to lie quietly on the ground while the battle was raging all around them Finally the call came Up Guards and at them So the call had now come to the women ot the country It was being be-ing realized at last that only through their power could the battle be won America must not die for when she dies all the dream of human liberty perishes with her It was announced that Mrs Saxon would deliver a lecture to ladies only on the subject of social purity at the Social Hall at 10 oclock this morning |
