| Show LACK OF HARMONY Californlons Dont Appear to be Satisfied With Each Other Special to TiE HERALD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON March 1SThere is a painful pain-ful lack of harmony amongtho Republican members of the California delegation here Senator Stanford and the representatives from the northern part of the state insist upon controlling the Federal patronage for that section General Vandever on the sect other hand insists that it was the lower part of the state which enabled the Republicans Repub-licans to gain the ascendency in the last election and he thinks therefore that he ought to have something to say about several sev-eral of the San Francisco offIces at least The pension agency for example is an office in which the whole state is interested inter-ested The naval office and the superin tendency of the mint are not confined in their importance to any particular portion I f lgr of the state and in the selection of officers for the places the southern section of the state ought to be considered He will insist that they be Thus far the delegation made but little progress in the matter of selecting persons upon whom they will unite in recommending for the office It was given out with a great flourish of trumpets several days rfgo that the entire en-tire list had been agreed upon This proves to be wholly untrue The delegation will hold another meeting in Stanfords committee com-mittee room tomorrow to further consider the matter Judgingfrom present indications indica-tions several additional meetings will beheld be-held before a definite conclusion can be reached Thus far the delegation have united upon practically but two gentlemen One of these is Mr Osborne for public printer and the other is Mr Misner for the mission to Mexico Mr Osborne by the way is winning golden opinions for himself The President is greatly pleased with him and notwithstanding the great number num-ber of well endorsed applicants for the position po-sition it is said the contest has narrowed itself down to the Los Angeles man and Mr Meredith of Chicago who served as a captain in President Harrisons regiment during the war An effort is being made to give Captain Meredith the superintendency of the bureau Qf engraving and printing the salary of which is the same as that of the public printer Should this arrangement be perfected it will it is believed greatly improve Mr Osbornes chances Some of the Californians think that Mr Misner ought to abandon his fight for the Mexican mission and accept the superintendency of the San Francisco mint These gentlemen argue that Mr Misner is an astute politician That in his hands the patronage of the mint which p very large would be to greatly strengtKfo the partys chances in the state Mr Miner however does not look upon the proposition with any great degree of favor as it is not probable that ho will be induced to make any change in his present plans Mr John F Swift the new minister to Japan is spending his time quietly in Washington Wash-ington preparing his argument in the Chin Pin Chan case which will come up in the supreme court one week from tomorrow The eastern press are unanimous in their approval of Mr Swifts selection for the Japanese mission A fact which President Harrisons friends say pleases that gentleman gentle-man immensely Mr Swift will leave for San Francisco about the 27th inst and will sail for his new post of duty the latter part of April |
