| Show A Bit of Personal History WASHINGTON March ISJ W Mason who today was nominated for commissioner commis-sioner of internal revenue is a resident of Grafton W Va He served in the Union army during the war and has since devoted himself to the practice of law He has been un active politician for many years Charles E Mitchell of Connecticut who is nominated for commissioner of patents is a patent attorney living in New Britain Conn He is about forty five years of age and well known throughout New England William W Thomas of Maine who was named for the Swedish mission gets his old office back again he having been minister min-ister of the United States to Sweden and Norway when Cleveland became President Smith A Whitfield the nominee for second sec-ond assistant postmastergeneral is a well known Ohio Republican about fortyfive years of age He was appointed postmaster at Cincinnati Abraham Hazen nominated to be third 3 assistant postmastergeneral held that office for some years prior to the spring of 1SS7 when he was surerceded by Harris who was a Democrat Hazen is a Pennsylvanian Pennsyl-vanian who after graduating from college col-lege entered the postoffice department as cerk He rose through various grades to the place of chief of the division of stamps and supplies In 1S77 he was appointed ap-pointed third assistant postmastergeneral and in this capacity he served with ability and efficiency for ten years When Cleveland Cleve-land came into office Hazen although a Republican was retained for two years because be-cause of his knowledge of the business that passed through his hands The third assistant postmastergeneral has charge of all matters relating to finances in the state postal service and has the letting of contracts con-tracts which involve the expenditure of a large amount of money Samuel R Taylor nominated as minister to the Netherlands is a lawyer in Minneapolis Minne-apolis He is fortyseven years of age a native of New York state and a graduate from Cornelia college He went to Minneapolis Minne-apolis and entered upon the practice of his profession where he attained a position in the front rank He is highly esteemed by the people of Minnesota and it is said he is well qualified for the duties of the position |
