Show JOHN SMITHS ESCAPE How the Wily Road Agent Eluded His Captors The readers of THE HERALD will icrneni tcr Mr John Smith ono of the four railway rail-way robbers who recently passed through Salt Lake on their way to Prescott An na It was very generally remarked at tpo time that the officers would meet vfiOji very good luck if they succeeded in Sjainfj all their birds A dispatch heretofore hereto-fore published in THE HECALD announced the escaPo of Smith but in what manner he obtained liberty is still unexplained lgrom 0 Santa Fe conductor who at La Junta saw the conductor of the train that carried the robbers it was learned that Smith who was partially undressed for the night slipped off his boots and with them the shackles and jumped from the train which was moving very slowing up the grade of Raton pass Smith then escaped across the rough country with the cuffs still upon his wrists and wearing neither hat nor shoes This account does not explain how the bandit eluded the vigilance vigi-lance of the guard of four officers who were armed with revolvers and Winchesters Winches-ters In reply to a telegram asking for particulars particu-lars a short dispatch has been received from Sheriff ONeil dated Prescott Arizona Ari-zona which would seem to indicate that hand h-and Deputy Sinclaire succeeded in safely jailing the other robbers Clark Steiner and Quince ONeils dispatch very brief and obscure was substantially as follows Smith jumped train near Raton shackled barefooted and halfdressed Stole horse made for Nation with Holten and Black sixteen hours behind SHERIFF W ONEIL The word shackled is interpreted handcuffed by the officers It is believed that tho robber must iu some way have gotten rid of his handcuffs at some country blacksmith shop before he stole the horse The Holten referred to is the special agent of the Atlantic Pacific road whose express ex-press car was robbed at Canon Diablo and Black is one of Sheriff ONeils deputies The fact that the deputies are sixteen hours behind is inexplicable except on the theory that they started en a false scent If Smith succeeds in stealing horses enough to get him into the Indian nation the caances are very small for his capture as he could easily lose himself in the crowds c f strangers and Oklahoma boomers boom-ers |
