Show THE STORY OF HIS WRONGS Captain Arraes Testifies and Tells How He Was Insulted WASHINGTON April 23 Captain Armes took the witness stand today before the Armes court martial board and testified in his own behalf He said that General Barnum had invited him to become a member mem-ber of his staff but he had declined as he expected to serve on Governor Beavers staff Ho made application in writing for a place on Governor Beavers staff and on February 13 received the appointment which he accepted A few dJ slater several gentlemen were on his recommendation recom-mendation appointed on the governors staff On February 29 General Hastings told the witness that his appointment was a mistake and when the witness asked why his name had been taken irom the list General Hastings said he did not want t talk about it Captain Armes said he then sent a letter demanding a written explanation General Hastings in reply wrote that the witness had not been appointed on the staff He called at inauguration headquarters next day and after some words General Hastings Hast-ings lost his temper and ordered the witness wit-ness out of the office but afterwards apologized apolo-gized Subsequently the witness was tendered ten-dered a commission as special aide which brought him nearer the President While riding alongside the VicePres idents carriage 11 Morton and Senator Cullom bowed to him and he returned the salute Captain Gibson and Captain Bourke dashed up at this instant and in a boisterous and drunken condition ordered the witness out of the pare and called on the police to aid in ejecting him Next day he swore out a warrant against Captain Bourke and sent it to Lieutenant Guy Three days after his brother told him the case had been nolle prosequied the day before be-fore on account of lack of witnesses He then went to see the adjutantgeneral and after being informed that Captain Bourke had preferred charges against him the witness said be would send a letter preferring pre-ferring charges against Captain Bourke and Colonel Gibson of assault on Governor Beaver in the Riggs house Armes testified tes-tified that he urged Governor Beaver to apologize to which the governor replied that he Armes must bear in mind that he was here as a private citizen and not as governor Pennsylvania they were on the same platform but he did not propose to do anything about the matter As he turned to go away Armes reached up his hand to stop him The governor considered it an insult and some words followed The witness asked the court to notice if he had reflected on Governor Beaver in the letters he had written He added But I did not hesitate to reflect on General Hastings Hast-ings I said he was not a gentleman I should have added that he was a liar and a coward In the course of a sketch of his career Captain Armes revealed the nature of the secret testimony given by Colonel Swords and SergeantatArms Canady In effect it was that Armes was one of the ten picked men sworn to secrecy who were to I act as a special body guard of the tHIS t-His orders were secret and even Governor Beaver did not know about them I |
