Show QUAY I IN WAR PAINT He i Very Angry with Sherman and Wants His Scalp TRED DUBOIS OFFICIAL BURDENS Patronage Hangs Heavy on His HanilsNo OfficeSeekers In IdahoThe Public Printer Special to TiE HERALD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON April 23 Senator Sherman Sher-man is not disposed to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by Senator Quay of Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania over the appointment of exCon grossman Hart as solicitor for the internal revenue bureau notwithstanding that the Pennsylvania Senator today dictated the following for Pennsylvania publication I consider Senator Shermans actions as discreditable dis-creditable and dishonorable and when I am found doing anything for Sherman again the people of the country will know it seems that both Senators had candidates for the position of deputy commissioner of internal revenue Quay stated that Sherman asked him to withdraw his uiairtn favor of the Ohio candidate maIIn didate promising in return to support a Pennsylvania man for the solicitorship of the bureau Quay agreed to this and went home Gilkeson of Ohio was appointed deputy commissioner and Quay says it was fully understood that Sherman should endorse en-dorse Frank Wilkison of Pennsylvania for the solicitorship But while he was away Alphonse Hart of Ohio was announced as the Presidents intended selection for solicitor solic-itor of internal revenue and for this action Quay holds Sherman responsible Senator Sherman says the Peunsylva nian has gone off in a fit and will realize his mistake when he cools off 4 I have no knowledge of any agreement II with him said the Ohio Senator last night 4 and I was in Ohio when the appointment of Mr Hart was made I never urged the appointment of 11 Hart t the position The Ohio delegation recommended him for assistant attorneygeneral a place he is abundantly qualified to nil for he is a very able man and fitted for a much higher position posi-tion While I was away it seems that the President and the attorneygeneral decided to offer Mr Hart the solicitorship of the internal revenue which he had not asked for and for which Senator Quay had a candidate can-didate Mr Hart on looking at the matter and seeing that the salary was the same although the duties are less pleasant decided to accept and did so We could not control the President and the attornej general They might have taken some outside man as they often do I believe be-lieve Sanator Quays claim is that he withdrew with-drew his candidate for assistant commissioner commis-sioner of internal revenue Mr Gilkeson and so assured the appointment of Mr Hart of Ohio Mr Gilkeson was then presented as a candidate for the solicitor ship and Ohio presented no candidate against him What passed between the i President and Mr Hart was beyond our power to control I think Senator Quay will understand this when he considers the matter I would not sa > an unkind word about him because I have been mad myself sometimes without jjd reason j |
