Show 7 i > TO THE CQtfNTY JAIL J t v T I j4t t I May Adams Sentenced to Sixty 1 r Days for Vagrancy A S < i li e May Adams the young girl charged with vagrancy was tried before Judge Pyper in the Police Court yesterd The evidence for the prosecution was mahly givea by the police and vasto the effect that M f waj in nefhabtid running around the streets rat late and unusual hours of the night that she was in the habit of restarting to the back rooms of beer saloons where she had been seen in the company ofwomen of the town and with men whose characters char-acters were even worse than the w4omen etc The defense introduced several witnesses among whom was F Rebr I man who testified that May had been working for him for some time and that she took her meal at his house He also testified that May was a married mar-ried lady but when pinned down he admitted ad-mitted that the ceremony had only been performed the night preyious and after she had been arrested the girl was sentenced to sixty days imprisonment in the county jail and her counsel gave notice of an appeal Her husband was afterwards seen making strenuous efforts to secure her release promising that if imprisonment imprison-ment were remitted he woud endeavor to make a good wife outof her He was referred to the Mayor as the only persOn per-sOn having authority to remit the punishment pun-ishment < r f 5 rf |
