Show DOWJN En A IOIE oI S A Train Thrown from the Track by Wreckers KANSAS Cm January 12 The soutL bound passenger train on the Missouri u Pacific Extension which left Omaha last night and was due here this morning morn-ing was wrecked near Duubar Nebraska Neb-raska about midnight The wreck was caused by the loosening of a rail done by parties known Several spikes S and fishplates had been removed and the train coming along at the rate of thirty miles pernour < JUMPED FIFTEEN FEET DOWN the embankment and landed in snowdrift snow-drift S James Dewitt of Wyandotte Kansas engineer was caught under the boiler and killed His body had not been recovered re-covered at last accounts Frank Meneweth express messenger whose home is in this city ii internally hurt and may die A lady whose name was not learned is badly hurt but the other passenger I are not seriously injured as far as is known here All were badly thaken up however and more or less oruised Thd entire train left the track and the probable loss of lift would have been great except for the snowbank which broke the force of the plunge The Missouri Pacific officials I here state that the wreck is the rEsUlt of the third attempt upon the life of Dewittthe engineer They say some of the men engaged in the strike last spring cherished a grudge against Dewitt because he was an active supS porter ofthe company S DURING THE GREAT TRIKE They assert the wreck near Wyandotte Wyan-dotte for which Hamilton has just been tried was the result bf a plot against Dewitts life but his train was not the first to pass over the track as they expected ex-pected Subsequently they say a second attempt was made and last night was the third Several sus jnciouslooking men it is said were seen loitering about the stafon at Dunbar last evening Tracks were found leading from the scene of the wreck which furnish a clue The sheriff and several others are searching the neighborhood and a reward re-ward will be offered for the wreckers i A number of California excursionist were among the party I |
