Show THE PRESIDENTS SPIES A W IIIXGTOX dispatch to the St Louis GlolicDcmncnit says the President has inaugurated in-augurated a spy system employing detectives detec-tives to watch the placehunter who throng the national capital The telegram quotes a friend of the Presidents as advising advis-ing an officeseeker to be most circumspect in his deportment while in Washington because be-cause HARRISON has set the secret service to work watching the daily and hourly life of no fewer than score of such gentlemen as you s I tell you be careful care-ful because at the present time it is impossible im-possible for you to take a drink in a public drinking place buy pool tickets at the races or be seen in bad company without the President having a full report of it There are men who cant understand why they failed of receiving appointments for which they were well backed and this may give some light on the subject The President is being sharply criticised For doing this it being held that he has no right to spy into the shortcomings of free American citizens Looking at the business busi-ness from one standpoint it docs give the President a narrow and cramped appearance appear-ance but there is another position from which a better view can be obtained There are so many scallawagsand disreputable disreput-able persons applying for office that it stands HARRISON in hand to watch carefully care-fully if ho would avoid getting men into positions where they would disgrace him and bring his administration into disrepute Some of those who have gone from Utah to the capital will bear watching and it is presumed that other sections of the country have contributed their respective quotas of men who would bring no credit Ito I-to the appointing power were they placed in office Instead of condemning President HARRISON for his course in this matter let us rather hope that his detectives will be thorough in their work and that they will advise him of their discoveries in every instance in-stance before it is too late If we bear in mind that they are Republicans with whom the President has to deal and Republicans who are hungry for office we will be charitable chari-table and overlook what would be impudent and irregular under other circumstances |
