Show CUBA AND CANADA Secretary Blames View Concern ing Their Acquisition I CHAUNCEYS CHANCERY CHANCES Depew Must Pay for His Oration Tlie Detec lives Working First Passenger on the New Route Special to THE HERALD ExaminerDispatch WASHINGTON May 14 Secretary Blaine in a recent conversation made some interesting statements as to his feel ings regarding the acquisition of Canada and Cuba by the United States He said that he thought any effort through congressional con-gressional action or otherwise to acquire Canada would be a mistake for the moment mo-ment it was apparent that we wanted her she would draw back I left to herself the time would come when Canada would drop like a ripe apple into our hands Cuba Mr Blaine thinks would be a very desirable acquisition commanding as it does the entrance to the gulf of Mexico and the waterway from the north to the south Mr Blame believes it would be import I impor-t nt in a military as well as a commercial I sense He does not think it necessary that the island if acquired should be admitted as a state in the union It might remain indefinitely under the territorial form oJ government This would permit the acton of a local legislature but would keep affairs under the constant control of the nations government Whether to urge legislation looking to the acquisition of the island at the next session of Congress the President has Dot yet decided I could hardly be acquired without legislation and it is not likely that Mr Elaine would open diplomatic negotiations negotia-tions without the sanction of Congress |
