Show I THE ELECTION FRAUD CASES The Inside of the Failure to Convict Illegal Voters WHEELING W Va March 23The United States districfcourt Judge Jackson presiding has been engaged this week in trying parties indicted at the last term for violations of election laws cases A good deal of interest has been excited owing to the fact that with four exceptions seventy odd indictments are all against Republicans and cases are being prosecuted by District Attorney Watts who refused to resign at President Harrisons request and who said i publicly if his resignation was demanded that convicted those indicted parties might not be I The Republicans claimed that the indictments indict-ments were found for effect on the pending election So far twentyone cases have been disposed of embracing alleged illegal voters and judges of election charged with knowingly receiving illegal votes and parties par-ties accused of inducing the casting of illegal votes Of these twentyone cases one pleaded guilty the jury failed to agree in one case two indictments were dismissed dis-missed by the district attorney and seventeen were acquitted |
