Show A Steel Works Disaster PirrcnnKO Sept 20At Carnegies I yvigar Thompson Steel works at Braddock t > night furnace C one of the largest of tk he glass furnaces gave way at the bottom and tons of molten metal like water escaping es-caping from a reservoir ran out The fur ace had not been working properly during the day and Captain Jones general manager of the works called tonight to see i he could ascertain tie cause He was working with a num berof men near the base of the furnace when the break occurred In an instant te dames and tire shot forth and the hot metal exploded and fell like sheets of water That anyone escaped Instant death is marvelous mar-velous Captain Jones was horribly burned and the physicians are unable t state tonight to-night i he will live or not Michael Quinn was so badly burned that his flesh peeled of f Ho cannot live John Mokoke is badly burned about the body Ned Quinn is badly burned about the chest Two or three other workmen whose names it is Impossible Impos-sible t get tonight were seriously injured L in-jured and may not recover f Captain Jones is well known throughout the United States and Europe wherever Iron and steel are manufactured The names of the other workmen who were burned are Patrick Hughes Michael Conner and John Needen Michael King a Hungarian was present when the seething mass poured out of the furnace and as ho cannot be found it is feared he has been covered up About six carloads of molten metal poured out of the break The terrible ter-rible rush of liquid steel knocked Jones down in the pit ortunately ho full between be-tween two nucks or lie would havo been burned instantly When removed from the pit his clothing had bean entirely burned from tho body The loss t the company will be quite heavy At midnight Captain Jones is resting easy Physicians say he will recover Two others oth-ers will die |
