Show PROGRESS IN INDIA This generation is witnessing the performance per-formance of a great work in India in the matter of overthrowing the barriers which have so long stood between women and their education and advancement in the active world Lady DITFEI took great interest in the work and among other things established female medical schools in several of the large cities Much opposition oppo-sition was at first encountered and objection objec-tion is still urged by the Indian men who in their belief that women are inferior will not admit that females are capable of being educated nor that it is right or propel to elevate the sex to anj thing like the plane occupied by men Lady Dun LKI persisted however and the success which attended her efforts was indicated somewhat recently on the eve of her departure for England Over seven hundred native women broke the rules which had always held them in the background antI held reception to express to her the gratitude which they felt No man was allowed to be present a woman even reporting the proceeding for the papers When it is understood that when an Indian woman asserts herself in this manner or breaks away from the restraints which the eastern customs and religion have placed around her and which deny her even the right to advance beyond the level of an inferior and menial she loses caste the heroism of the ladies who took part in the farewell to Lady DUIEUIN is little less than wonderful won-derful The eyes of a few hav m0 oecn opened and the intellects been set at work rapid proglcss may bo expected A decade will crush the eil work of centuries and a generition will entirely chance public opinion in regard to the status or women The advance has been so rapid that it is not too much to expect that bj the close of the century Indian women will be recognizeu in their own country as having souls as well as bodies and as being human entitled enti-tled to the enjoyment of most of the rights and privileges enjoyed by the sex in civilized civ-ilized communities |
