Show HINGE ANDSTARULLN1 + A Litlc Girl of Eleven Years Suicides Sui-cides With Strjchnine A strange and startling tragedy oc c rred at the residence of Mr Stephen Parker No 450J E Eighth South Street last evening A little girl about II years of age named Emily Honey sett resided at that house and it is supposed that she was au adopted daughter of Mr Parkers A young man about 20 years of age named Joeph Parker ame home at about G oclock and asked Emily to get him some supper She immediately started to prepare supper and Socw had it ready for him She appeared to be in her usual health and spirits and hinted jt nothing that would lead one to suppose that she was A110UT TO COMMIT SUCH AS ACT as selfdestruction Almost as soon as the young man had seated himself at the table Emily left the room and went into another containing a bureauin one of the drawers of which a small vial of strychnine was kept She soon came out again however and went about her duties for a short time conversing pleasantly with the youi g man In avery a-very little while however she again entered the room mentioned above stayed for a few seconds and then returned re-turned with some fancy work in her hand ahe took her seat at the table and smiled and chafed mirrily The y meg man noticed a rathcr strange movt mont however looking more closely and thinking from her appearance that she was about to faint he asked her what the trouble was Sh carelessly replied Oh nothing The young map became alarmed and asked again Vhat is the trouble Did you hurt your finger with that needle She replied re-plied No not that bat I know what itis What is itW he abfeed she looked up at him smiled and told him that SUE HAD TAKEN STRYCHNINE He did no believe the girl was telling him the truth but she insisted ihat she had swallowed the poison She was immediately seized with another convulsion and fearing that she had poisoned herself he at once gave her a Irinkof water and made her swallow some hot lard During an interval between the convulsions she Called for Mr Parker and that gentleman came and took her in his arms As soon as possible Dr Benedict was summoned who used all his skill in endeavoring to save the childs life but with no avail he dying a short time afterwards She told the doctor that she had taken TWO PINCHES OF THE POISON which amounted to about ten grain The doctor describes her sufferings as horrible in the extreme and says the convulsions occurred so frequently as to almost preclude the possibility of holding any conversation with ier except ex-cept as to the quantity of poison she had taken No reasons for the rash act of the poor girl was obtained and wnat I prompted her to commit so terrible a deed will no doubt forever remain a mystery Her father who resides a mile west of Murray was sent for but it was not thought that he reached her bedside before she died It was learned later in the evening that Emily had shown a letter to young Mr Parker which was addressed to her grandmother at Cottonwood and contained these words Graudma when yc < iu receive this I shall be dead The young man had read but these words when Emily took the letter away from him and burned it The unfortunate un-fortunate little girl had A STBOSG DREAD OF DIPHtHERIA and was so frightened whenever a case was discovered near her home as to be almost insane on that point She had frequently remarked that she would rather take strychnine and die than be stricken with that dread disease The doctor describes her as strong healthy active and well developed for her age and says that in all his experience experi-ence he has never met with so strange and sad a case An inquest will doubtless doubt-less he held to day I |
