Show A STATE ANARCHY An Allpffd highHanded Political OntJ age WORK OF A DESPERATE MOB They Forcibly Oust Offlcl d HUJD the house IT One nn < l Create a Iteign of lernir A Wild and Dent Mob DENVER February 2Pttgs Springs the seat of Archuleta Cuunu u in ti state of anarchy A mob bus driven the county commissioners from tne town burned several UOIIPJ of Commissioner Com-missioner d ase and forceii him to resign re-sign his uffi e at the point of a revolver re-volver A speci il from there says J B Martinez J P Archulrta and Mr bcase Republican county cotniuiii sionri wOre on Tt iua < v l I unseated un-seated by the Democratic npiff named Height The act was done with 1Jlitlfal intenta d the mob whah toiiowed the sheriff after having accomplished the actof intimidation BURNED THE JTOUSE of Mr Scase at Pagosa Springs This last act was committed on Monday during the absence of Scase in Denver Last November the abovenamed commissioners com-missioners were elected bv Republican votes a the same time that a Democrat Demo-crat named Height was electeu sheriff There was great feeling at the polls hUt 1 the preponderating M < zican YJte assured Martinez Archuleta and Scase of their triumph ovf phe attacKs of their antagonists They were Mexicans and this too added strength to the bitterness prevalent The feeling increased instead of diminishing as the time of their induction induc-tion into office approached and January 3 at the county seat the tune for their official appearance an arine I body of fifteen or twenty deierui ed men led by Sheriff Height forc d away a-way into thj room where toe cotnmia sioner were seated and demanded qf them that they VACATE TUsIB SlATS The sheriff insisted that their resignations resigna-tions be made at once elsu there would be blood shed The commissioners had mistaken the temper of the mob and rued fu ru-ed under the impression that tbe demonstration was nothing more than bluster but the mob intent on its purpose pur-pose took forcible possession of the cammisbioners end with more threats locked them in a room declaring it to be their purpose Jo atarvo them into snbjiission At the time of thIS forcible entry one member Martinez left the room and escaped from the building A delegation overtook him and FORCIBLY DRAGGED IIIII through the streets to the court house and locked him up with his companions Finally at th expiration of five or six hours the mob permitted their prisoners to go but the concession seemed to be for a purpose As soon al the three Commissioners separated the mob with the sheriff still at their head followed commissioner Scase to his home Scase was the proprietor of the hotel at Pagosa Springs and it was here that he resided The mob surrounded sur-rounded the hotel and taking Scase again into custody he was dragged I forth I FROM THE MIDST OF HI3 FAMILY and with a gun barrel at his I head compelled to resign his office as commissioner The re u nation so obtained was at once forwarded for-warded to Governor Adams and instructions i in-structions ent with it that he appoint at once a Democrat in place of Scase Since that time the board has not met no laws hare been enforced and a condition con-dition of things bordering upon anarchy anar-chy has prevailed The commissioners have not been permitted to set foot in the county since the day they were warned at the peril of their lives not to return In fact it was DANOEEOUB TO REMAIN IN THE VICINITY and so they started at once to Denver not only for protection but to lay their grievances before their representatives in the Legislature and the povernor ° The Governor is doing all in his power to secure a peaceful settlement ot the trouble The matter will be brought before the General Assembly today and a joint committee appointed to investigate in-vestigate the affair at once |
