Show ANOTHER AKRBST A Bird That was Hard to Trap Rnn in at Last The readers of THE HERALD will remember re-member that some time since we published pub-lished an account of an exploit which the deputies had in trying to arrest one Allan Hunsaker in which some boys guns and con iderabe bad talk figured conspicuously Vfe are informed that the deputies have paid about fifteen I visits to Mr Hunsakers place but I their efforts to arrest him were always abortive until Tuesday their labors were crowned with success Air Hunsakera place a ranche i situated about five milts from Bear River City and lies on each side of the Malad Creek a deep crooked and dangerous little stream The deputies some four in number arrived at the ranche about 10 oclock on Tuesday morning having spent the night Monday Mon-day in Corinne One of th deputies McLnnan had secured a horse in Connne and upon nearing ihe ranch the party separated those in the carriage approaching the 1 house from rhe east land McLennan on horseback riding up from the wes The dog cave warning of the approach and Mr H upon going out to learn the cause 01 alarm spied the horseman on the west and on looking in the opposite op-posite direction saw a carriage aj proaching Not caring to interview the strangers he mounted a horse that he bad kept saddled for a couple of days past and started to leave the ranch inconsiderable in-considerable haste Not knowing who the solitary horseman was he started out almost directly in his direction but as he drew near the command halt was given and followed by a rifle shot bull the fleeing man did not stop and another command to stop and another shot from a rifle in the hands of McLennan Mc-Lennan and the fleeing fugitive was gone The omnipresent wire fence however stood as an obstacle in the way and McLennan spurred toward the only opening in the field thus shutting off all avenue of egress In the meantime however Mr H had continued his flight and finally found himself hemmed in by the deputies depu-ties on two sides and the st ep banks of I the creek and a wire fence on the remaining re-maining ones Still unwilling to give up he saw a bare chance of escape and at once embraced it by jumping from his horse and wading the stream the water ot which was freezing cold and deep enough to strike a man about the oreast Leaving the horse on the bank he plunged in and waded across to the other side and hid in the rank canes that skirted the banks To leave this place of hiding and attempt to escape was utterly impossible and to lie quiet seemed very much like death from cold but the latter of the two horns of the dilemma was grappled and for three lung hours he lay concealed from view At last however the deputies accompanied by Mr Huusakers oldest son appeared on the scene and as there was no other chance the elder Hunsaker graciously gave himself up and after gong back to the house to get a change of clothing accompa ned them to Ogden The officers first > took their prisoner to the City Hall but as they could not gel a receipt for his safe Keeping they took him to Sheriff Belknap who locked him up in the County Jail until yesterday yes-terday afternoon Mr Hunsaker was 3tenibly arrested on a charge of grand larceny in having stolen some sweep but he claims that he can easilv explain ex-plain the sheep transaction bv written do nme its Le ha in h s possession To a reporter who visited him IK the Oounty Jail Mr Hunsaker related his adventures with a goodnatured bmile saying that he did rather object at the time to being made a target for McLeii mns bullets but since the thing was all over with be was glad he had not returned the fire as he might have done had he had his gun with him He did not seem to be any the worse for the wetting he received and JOKed good naturedly with Deputy Cudihee who came to the jail to take him before the Commissioner He ida id-a short but powerfully built man and the wrestler bantered him for around He replied that he was not stuck at that kind of work but had some brothers that would give the deputy as much as be wanted Later Mr Hunsaker was taken before be-fore the commissioner and plead to three indictments charging unlawful cohabitation It seems that the warrant of arrest was nor lead at the time he was ta en ino custody and Mr H consequently nd not know what he was charged with I |
