Show THE CYCLORAMA Exhibition of the Battle of Gettysburg Get-tysburg A few who were invited mainly representatives re-presentatives of the press witnessed the informal opening off tho Battle of Gettysburg last evening Among those present were many ladies The building Jf circular of brick and towers toward the pianacle in conical form the entrance is from the east side wee tae visitor goes down a few st PS then along an aisle and upward to a large circular platform or dais where the grand picture is stretched a1 around him In order to fully coiape hend the scene the beholder must relieve re-lieve his mind of the idea tba he it looking at a circular view and try to conceive of it all as something contained con-tained within one scope of the visual organs He is aided ° largely in tbis by the natural effects thrown in between the point of observation and the painting some of which Untie with the canvass so nicely that it seems one continuous presentation In this spect we me i tion particularly a stone wall south of Gettysburg and north of the plateau over which the gallant men under General Gen-eral Picket dashed madly against the Union forces only to be decimated by a foe of steel and iron as well as ol fltsh and a natural tree part of which is blended with the painting in the most artistic manner Then there is one of the most artistically executed wheat uMch with the golden grain ready for cue harvester but broken down in paths where men and artillery artil-lery are pushing to the front ever seen in any work of art Some of the lay figures of the dead are rather exaggerated exag-gerated as to size countenance and complexion but we are willing will-ing to regard these as among the crudities inevitable in a hasty and imperfect im-perfect preparation General Hancock is there on a black horse at thE post of danger in the very fore front of the battle Geeral Pickett on a white charger is also discernible in the ois tance and between them amid th complicated and confused incidents uf elm strife a handtohand struggle oetween remnants of commands on either sides is going on this feature representing the most northerly point ever gzined by the Confederate flag which is then and there waving as orondly and triumphantly as though it ere not the emblem of a brave and alnt people struggling m a cause oredoomsd to d ath The cyclorama revives war memories vivirfy and as a 011 of art alone it is worth visiting |
