Show Comrades in Washinston Washingon WASHINGTON May SO Although the weather prospects were dubious this morning the veterans of the late war turned out in good force to make their annual an-nual pilgrimage to Arlington the Soldiers home and other grounds where the remains of their old comrades rest and to pay tributes of respect and affection in the shape of floral offerings and suitable ceremonies cere-monies There was little evidence of business busi-ness activity and the spirit of the day was tolerably observed The Grand Army of the Republic concentrated its efforts upon Arlington AttorneyGeneral Miller was the representative of tho administration at that place General D S Alexander was the orator > of the day and a poem was delivered b y Eugene F Ware of Kansas There was appropriate music by the Marine band and a salute was fired by a battery of artillery General Sheridans grave was especially decorated by theladies of the Potomac relief corps and tnemonumentof General Gabriel S Paul was unveiled with an appropriate address by Chief Justice Charles Drake At the Soldiers home Major S S Rock wood delivered the oration and Colonel Dewitt Sprague read an original poem while similar offices were performed at the I Congressior cemetery by Hon W W Curry and E B Fleming respectively Flowers were strewn over General Logans tomb by a committee of the Logan guard of honor I At St Matthews church mass was cole rated at 9 oclock for the repose of the soul of the late General Sheridan and for i tht soldiers who fell in battle The attendance at Arlington cemetery was unusually large Mrs Harrison Mrs McKee and husband and Dr Scott of the White House brought boquets which they placed on General Sheridans grave Gen oral Schofield and staff and Senators I Sawyer and Manderson were present the Sheridan LtLlOth r members of the G A R committee of the Womens Relief corps and Loyal legion com inandery gathered within the enclosure round the monument The Marine and played a dirge FtanJ old veteran ulled a rope and the flags which have covered the monument since it was put in place fell to the ground exposing to view the plain i granite shaft thirteen feet high and bearing on its face the bronze bust me allion of General Sheridan The Womens relief corps threw a shower of roses around the base of the monument and later in the day the children of General Sheridan added their contribution to the heap which kind hands had strewn about their fathers grave |
