Show TEST IT Every time the matter is mentioned somebody bobs up with the declaration that flowing wells cannot be obtained in the eastern part of the city Ask him how he knows and he will generally answer because they cant which is no reason whatever As a matter of fact there has never been a thorough test It may satisfy some to say that the conformation of the country is such that no hope of tapping subterranean streams need be entertained but it seems to us that this assertion ought not to satisfy the corporation in its present distress We all know that it is no trick at all to drive wells and obtain water anywhere in the southwestern western and northwestern quarters of the city If this water comes from the river the theory as to conformation conforma-tion is correct but if the water comes from the mountains as some believe it must flow under the city from the east and wells bored or driven in the eastern quarter to tap the streams would simply have to be sent down deeper than those along the bottom lands Depth within reasonable limits should not be taken into account under the circumstances A flowing flow-ing well anywhere cast of East Temple and north of Fourth South would be invaluable If one can be had the expense should not stand in the way for if water in that district dis-trict can be had by boring a large part of the troublesome problem can be readily solved It is of little concern to the city that along the banks ofthe Jordan anywhere within the city limits subsurface streams can be readily and inexpensively in-expensively tapped and vigorous flows brought > to the surface To be available the water must be pumped two or three miles there being no other way for getting it onto the land There is now dry as the season has been twice as much water flowing flow-ing in the Jordan past the city as would be required to give everybody all he needed for irrigation It would be as easy to pump this as that which might be had through flowing wells We think it should be worth the while of the corporation to make a thorough test of the problem and ascertain beyond the possibility pos-sibility of a doubt if driven or bored wells can be had anywhere the eastern part of the Tenth and Eleventh wards One such well there would be worth a dozen in the I western quarter where three seasons Qt of four little water is neededandfrequently the land would be bcnentted i by a system of drainage It will cost something to make the test but the possibility of success will furnish abundant justificacion for the expenditure and a flowing well would warrant war-rant the outlay of any sum that the undertaking un-dertaking could reasonably involve |
