Show GIVE UTAH A CHANCE As a company the Union Pacific made a mistake perhaps an innocent one when it gave the contract for the construction of the first two hundred miles of the Cal ornia branch extension to Omaha parties without letting Utah parties have a chance to bid for the work It is known that Utah contractors have done the cheapest railroad work ever done in the far west Gentlemen Gentle-men from this country go into Colorado Nebraska Kansas Montana and other places and readily secure grading contracts because they are known to be honest up right reliable and energetic and because they are not given to striving for the acquirement quirement of the earth at the expense of the laboring classes But aside from the question of cost it seems to us that it was unwise to ignore the people of this terri tory in this manner I will tend to continue con-tinue the inrgression that is too general that the great railway corporation has little interest in the welfare of Utah and her people At least it will not be interpreted inter-preted as showing a disposition on the part of the company to cultivate a feeling of mutual consideration and helpfulness A good many unfavorable comments have already ready been heard and comparisons are drawn which are not creditable to the Union Pacific Tun HERALD is not disposed dis-posed to believe that the action was intended tended to be regarded in the light in which so many view it Wo think that the corn any expected that Utah people largely would perform the labor and that tie supplies would bo furnished mostly oy our people I the purpose iso is-o discriminate against the local commu city in the matters of labor and supplies as was done in awarding the contract the resentment will certainly be of such a character as to make itself felt to the injury in-jury of the railroad company to which weal we-al have the right to look for assistance in our efforts towards progress and development develop-ment |
