Show A ShOUTING BEE ExDeputy Marshal F V Kxum Shoots ChaletS Chalet-S King Editor of the Union OGDEN Utah Nov 30Special telegram tele-gram to TUE HERALDlA few days ago the Daily Union an evening newspaper of this city edited by C S King published a most vile scandalous and unjustifiable attack at-tack upon E W Exum eJ deputy United States marshal The article in question dealt with matters which whether true or false ought never to bo paraded in the dudr A i columns of a newspaper Naturally the injured husband was indignant Naturally all ri rightthinking men and women condemned con-demned the brutality of such an attack upon a hapless woman Mr Exum it is alleged visited King on the following day and procured from him a retraction which he published over his oivh signature but immediately following the a knowledg ment that he had publisLcJ what was false and libelous the editor in a postscript viitually reiterated the charge Before the Union was circulated that evening the editor loft the town and did not return until yesterday morning It was learned during the day that King had been indicted for libel and that he had been arrested ar-rested and released upon his own recognizance recogni-zance About 331 p in a crowd collected in front of Peebles drug stole on Washington Wash-ington avenue into which King had entered I en-tered in a hurry Inquiry revealed tnefact that he had been shot and wounded and it was alleged that E W Exum had done the I shooting Upon entering the store your informant saw King sitting in a chair with I a wound in his neck Later the following particulars of the encounter was learned During tho afternoon King started down 1 Twentyfifth street and when nearly opposite oppo-site the Central hotel saw Exum coming up tho street from the opposite direction A few words passed between tho tvo men when it i is alleged Exum strew a Colts six shooter and commenced firing on King who ran up the street After firing four shots Exum was arrested by Ofllcor Sleeth and taken to tho police court room where Justice Preshaw released him upon his own recognizance to appear on Monday for a preliminary examination After King had been seated in a chair in the drug store it was discovered that he had been wounded He was afterwards conveyed Inn hack to his residence and soon Dr Bryant appeared and made an examination It was found that one bullet had entered on the left side of the throat just above the collar bone plowed its way under the skin scraping the wind pipe and lodging under the skin on the opposite side The bullet was cutout cut-out Another bullet inflicted flesh wound on tho calf of his right leg After being released by Judge Preshaw a warrant was sworn out before Commissioner Cross before whom ho was taken The commissioner commis-sioner admitted him to bail in tho sum of 5000 to appear before the grand jury H H Rolapp and J J Sullivan became his sureties Exum alleges that ho knew nothing of the indictment of King until after the shooting Kings wound in the throat is pronounced dangerous Last night ho had a high fever |
