Show REPUBLICAN CAUCUS Reed of Maine is Nominated for Speaker of the House THE MINERAL LAND CONVENTION In HontanaThe Sanitation of ShipsPoison In Place of Medicine Colorado Coal Mines Closed WASHINGTON Nov 30The Republican caucus was called to order promptly at noon today Cannon of Illinois chairman chair-man of the caucus resigned his place being be-ing a candidate for the speakersbip and Henderson of Illinois was chosen chairman chair-man The call of the roll developed the presence of 165 members four less than the Republican strength in the house Mr Mudd contestant for Comptons seat from the Fifth Maryland district took no part in the proceedings I was resolved that the balloting should begin at once The first ballot resulted Reed 78 McKinley 39 Cannon Burrows 10 Henderson 1C Before the second ballot was called one of the absentees Herrman entered and on the second ballot voted for Reed The following fol-lowing changes were recorded McKinley to Reed CulberUon Henderson to Reed Bergen Hansborougb PicKler Cannon to Reed Gifford Lind Cannon Henderson Bartine This made the total stand Reed 85 McKinley Cannon 19 Henderson 14 Burrows 10 The announcement of the vote which gave Reed the Republican nomination nom-ination was greeted with applause and the candidate returned thanks Edward McPherson and John M Carson were placed in nomination for the clerkship clerk-ship and McPnerson was elected 115 to 50 A J Holmes exmember of Congress from Iowa and A H Reed of Minnesota were candidates for sergeant atarms and Holmes was elected by 14 to 13 The contest over the door keepership was very animated the candidates being Charles W Adams of Maryland and James A Wheat of Wisconsin Adams was elected by a bare majority 83 to b2 Wheat however was immediately nominated nomi-nated for postmaster receiveing 99 votes against for Leitell 20 for Warrell and 10 for McKee Rev Charles B Ramsdell of the North Presbyterian church was nominated for chaplain and the caucus adjourned ad-journed |
