Show THE SINGLE SCULLER I Charles G Psotta to Row in the Henley Regatta STAXEORD ON EARLY TRAINING The Earl of Dunravcn and Ills Yaclit Valkjrl Australias Great Fighter Baseball Notes Chess and Checkers Charles G rsotta the champion single sculler of America is about to start for England Eng-land to compete in tho Henley regatta Psotta made his first appearance in 1SS7 his first race in public being on tho Passaic river July 5 when he won tho junior sculls I at the Passaic River Jat 4 er Amateur Rowing Row-ing association says The If e w York Journal The distance dis-tance was a mile and a half straightaway straight-away and young Psatto won in fine style by half a doz t3ea lengths defeating defeat-ing field of nine in Om 08s In the following year he appeared on tho same water at tho regatta of tho same c o rsOTTA organization o n Juno 11 He participated in the race for the same sculls but was defeated by half o length by William Goepfert of tho Metropolitan Metro-politan Rowing club whose time was OSo 8s The contest was close and interesting all the way Ho next appeared at tho Peoples regatta held July 4 at Philadelphia when ho was fenced but managed to finish second The race was won by Baltz of the Pennsylvania clubAt At tho annual regatta July 26 and 27 for the amateur championship he rowed in a a strange boat and was beaten by Corbott of the Farragut club On Sept 2S he won tho senior singles at the Potomac river regatta held at Washington when ho won by ten lengths in Om ills for the mile and a half His first race in 1SSS was at tho Passaic regatta < re-gatta May SO when he won the senior singles sin-gles defeating E J ilulcahey of Albany N Y He won by three lengths in Om 4s On Juno 8 he took part in tho regatta of the New England Rowing association held at Jako Quinsigamoud Mass and won the two y mile race with a turn in fast time defeating Cummings and Corcoran quite easily He again took part in tho Peoples regatta held at Philadelphia on July 4 1SSS and was more successful than in 1SS7 adding another laurel to his wreath by winning and defeating defeat-ing tho champion J F Corbett of Chicago Ills The distance 1 a mile and a half was rowed by him in 10m 54s He was at tho national regatta July IS and 20 at Sunbury and won the championship champion-ship from D Donohue of Canada after rowing row-ing the hardest race of his life Tho race was a beauty from the start to the finish and was only won by half a second His last appearance last year was at the Potomac regatta held Aug 0 J at Washington Washing-ton D C when ho won the singles in Om 56s defeating E Kearney of Institute i club of Newark and C C Smithson of the S f Potomac Boat club Mr Paotta was born on Washingtons birthday 1SG5 and weighs when rowing about ICo pounds |
