BUT AS IT turned out, what they thought to be an old abandoned aban-doned well is a cistern, extensively exten-sively used back at the turn of the century but left inoperable for many years. "You could tell from the stink of the muck that was collected col-lected in the cistern that it hadn't been used for a long time," commented Mrs Steven (Jaxine) Rodgers. "But we don't know for sure how long it has been there." SHE SAID the cistern was discovered deep under a foundation they were digging for a large addition to their home at 397 North 300 East, Bountiful. "It turned out to be 11 feet across and 18 to 20 feet deep," she said. "It was beautifully lined with brick and a hard substance sub-stance like concrete." THE TOP of the abandoned cistern was unearthed while . construction crews were digging dig-ging a basement to the east of the present Rodgers home. Steven Rodgers was mighty surprised when e& crews uncovered an old cistern located in the tr of his home at 397 North 300 East, Bountiful-1; underground facility was used by Pioneers water, but has not been used for more than 50)f5" some 20 fee deeper, creating quite a problem for crews to excavate the well-like facility that was now filled with large rocks, dirt, sand and more than 50 gallons of murky, polluted water. "What's so funny about this whole thing is that Steve now remembers that as a youngster he used to throw rocks down a shaft near his grandfather's home," said Mrs. Rodgers, explaining ex-plaining that the home was once owned by Eli Rodgers.
