Show THEY ARE STILL HERE Tile worm Still Governed by Intolerance > In-tolerance Prejudice and Superstition Su-perstition The people of today felicitate themselves them-selves that the 6ays of ignorance bigotry + otry and superstition have passed and that now the people of civilized countries are living and acting in a glare of enlightenment Delusive thought What do we see in the government ernment of Austria It rejects in advance vance a minister from this country because his wife is Jewess Where among the annals of the old superstitions supersti-tions is there anything more absurd And yet it seems Right to the imperia wisdom of that august and ancient dynasty Yet how frivolous how weak how darkened to reason and justice is such intolerance The ages are clotted with the blood of innocent men women and children growing out of just such bigotry as that AV different differ-ent religions have gained ascendencies those of different beliefs have been ostracized and put to cruel deaths But this boasted land of liberty has not escaped in its superstitions Our forefathers came her to worship God according to the dictates of their own consciences and when they became stronger they persecuted blameless quakers to prisons and death ad burned witches They declared it to be Gods will to do so Then and later they said that the Bible and God up held slavery and all along to the present government and people have voluminously repeated that the United States was asylum for the oppressed of all nations and yet today Chinamen are tortured and slain with the utmost barbarity and when and where have the murderers paid the forfeitof their crimes Where are the parties that stand up and say that snclugnilt shall be punished For years and years the public mind has been inflamed against the distant Mormons Finally a law was passed to partially disfranchise them and crush outheir1 religion The law waS made severe against lewd and lascivious cohabitation intending to break up the plural families But it has been found that the law fairly admInistered would bear doWn as heavily upon outside prostitution And it was found out that while the Gentiles of Utah were prosecuting and making the air blue with curses against the Mormons that they themselves were practicing lewd and lascivious cohabitation cohab-Itation in the basest shape making low dens of it and rolling in its rottenness rotten-ness Lately some of them have been arrested for this one Hundred fold worst violation of the law but the district atfJrnpmand judge of that I erritoryhave releases the prisoners alleging the gauziest reasons ever ut tered that the Mormons entrapped them into itthe acts of violation being too palpable plain and overwhelming to deny the offense itself It may be that the attorney and judge were participators par-ticipators in the crime Be that as it may does it not show a discnminatica and injustice equal to the absurdity of Austrias position Grant that the Mormon position is a bad one does that excuse their persecutors in that which is worse Is the judge to be sustained who turns loos ° the worse violator and hankers with whetted malice to punish the least Public clamor and intensified goaded on pre dudice he relies upon to bear him out in that prostitution Will the government govern-ment see that the law is impartially administered to all alike or will it suffer the reverse and place itself in a position to be rebuKed by bigoted and tyrannical Austria Hart Mich JlLord of the pirit n |
