Artillery Infantry Medical Cor > s and Pay Corps There was no intermission between the army and navy reception The line of naval officers followed on the footsteps of army officers It was headed by Admiral Ad-miral Porter by his side walked Admiral Ad-miral Worden Following came the different chiefs of the bureau Navy Department and many other naval officers of prominence in fact like the army the navy was represented by nearly every officer who I is as present in Washington Of course I both army and navy officers were in full dress uniform and presented avery a-very handsome appearance in the east room where they gathered for a few moments after reia reception i in the Blue Parlor The new officials from the various departments were nearly all present Civil Service Commissioners Commis-sioners Edgerton Trenholm and Eaton and Commissioners of Education Educa-tion Eaton and Professor Baird followed by Professor Powell and all heads of the scientific departments led in this procession Then followed all heads of bureaus in the department who are presidential appointees Assistant As-sistant Secretary Fairchild led the Treasury officials The Mexican Veterans Vet-erans Association was well represented repre-sented members numbering sixty filed in and paid thsir respects to the President Following them came the oldest inhabitants numbering about fifty Their appearance was venerable and very impressive G A It delegations delega-tions foflowed The pleasant weather served to bring out the largest New Year representa tion for many years Members were in line according to their posts and numbered about 1000 in all They I were admitted through the west gates at the Avenue and before the Time had finished coming up rline I the walk the ront was going j occupying the middle of the street When thej time arrived for the general reception the gateiwere opened and the lino passed through the whole house Notwithstanding Not-withstanding the irumeuso crowd the best of order prevailed and everything passed off in a smooth manner During Dur-ing reception alt tie parjors except the East room were darkened and when the diplomatic army arid navy and oth4r officials entered the beautiful beauti-ful room the effect was most brll liant The sun shone brightly through the sofltheru windows and the splendid landscape viewed from them added no little to the charming scene It is estimated that over 6000 people shook hands with the President during the reception The President lowered the record of handshaking considerably consider-ably In nine minutes he hook hands with 274 personsombout thirty four a minute The highest number previously shaken by a President on New Year s day was by General Grant when he grasped the hands of twenty eight persons a minute for thirteen minutes |
