Show OAKLAND An ezcharge has a Washington vjetial saying that AttorneyGeneral Garlands resignation is in the hands o he President but tho latter does nol want Garland to retire under fire Cite AttorneyGeneral is not particularly particu-larly a xious to get out of the Cabinet but says he will go rather than have the administration embarrassed Peo pie of ordinary itatincts and common ideas of propriety cannot understand why Mr Garland did not retire when it cduie OUt that he Was a stockholder iu the Pan Electric and Pan Telephone Companies in whose behalf his department depart-ment of government was proceeding ia the attack upon the Bell telephone patent To such people his failure togo to-go is still more remarkable since it has come to light that the 500000 of Pan Electric stock and 1000000 of Pan Telephone stock COM him not a nickel the whole being give to him some of it while he was a United States Senator and the remainder since he entered the Cabinet Some of Mr uarlands friends claim that he came honestly by the stock which was presented pre-sented to him not for the purposed securing his influence in Congress and the Cabinet but because it was thought that his name would help boom the company and give value to the shares This might be satisfactory if it were not entirely unsatisfactory to sensible thinking people Garland is a poormau and the fact that he was interested in a company would have no effect upon the shares with capitalists His name is of very little commercial value in the world His position however how-ever is worth a good deal to sharpers who want to use it for carrying a scheme As a private citizen A H Garland could be of no possible good to the Pan Electric Company but as Senator Sen-ator or AttorneyGeneral he might prove invaluable view of the aims and purposes of the company But what destroys the story that Garland was wanted in the company not for anything any-thing he was expected to do but merely because his name was an honorab one and could be used to advantage is the fact = that the name was not used bUt was actually kept hidden until it was dug up by the newspaper reporters If this is not an instance of official crookedness crook-edness of the ugliest description appearances ap-pearances are decidedly against the gentleman An administration that is not embarrassed em-barrassed by the exposure will very much embarrass its party unless it gets rid of the member against whom there is certainly good ground for suspicion |
