Show General Hancock CrsciSHATi 0 February 10 ews of the death of Gen Hancock fell with peculiar sadness upon the ears of mem bers of the Ohio Commandery Loyal Legion whose annul dinner was set for tomorrow night Gen Hancock was the head of the order in the United States Upon the arrival of exPresi dent Hayes tu nfht a meeting of the council of administration will be held to decide upon a course of action Subsc quently an informal meeting of the commandery was held at which Con mander Hayes announced the death of the head of the order and after a few words of eulogy stated that the office had agreed that in view of this great bereavement all of the proposed feativ ties tomorrow night should be aban doned but that companions should meet and hear the addresses that bate been prepared pertaining to the mem priiil occasion There will be a sapper but no wines or liquor Gen Hayes thought in this way the memory of the dead commander should be properly honored This action wa unanimously approved A committe of which Gen J D Cox is chairman was appointed to prepare suitable paper upon the death of Gen Hancock to be presented at to morrows m cling General Hayes tonight sent the fol lowing telegram > Jr + Wmfields Hancock GuverMri I itlid New York The sad iutelliRenca of the death of Your noble husband fills with grief the companions of Ohio Commandery Loyal Legion now assembled here We tend r you our heartfelt sympathy in you r bereavement Signed R B HAYES Commander Fully 300 companions and 150 ladies will be here tomorrow and tomorrow to-morrow night General Sherman eneral Horation R King Genera Law Wallace General C H Grosvenor I General Louis A Fairchild Governor Foraker LieutenantGovernor Kennedy Ken-nedy and General W T Clarke are I among the gentlemen who will make addresses The decoration at Burnet House where the meeting is to be held will be appropriately dressed in mourn ing NEW YORK February lOThe body of General Hancock remained in the room in which he died last night Many more telegrams were received among them from Rutherford B Hayes Samuel Sa-muel J Tilden General O Howar and from civil and military authoritie I in all portions of the I Arran country Arrangements Arrange-ments for the funeral are being rapid 5 perfected The body will be taken from Governors Island to Battery on Satur day morning by the steamer Chester A Arthur All officers connected with the Post and as many soldiers as can b e spared will accompany the remains 1 he funeral procession will proceed u P Broadway to Trinity Church wher services will be conducted by Rev Dr Morgan Dix and his assistants Ther will be no military music whateve in the procession and the only troops in line will be those from Governors Is land The staff of the late general will follow the hearse The ceremonies at the church will be of the simplest character char-acter possible There will be no address The body will l be taken to Jersey City where a special train will take th ye funeral party to Philadelphia The train will arrive at Philadelphia at 14 5 oclock There the Philadelphia division 5l divi-sion of the military order of the Loya Legion will join the party and accompany accom-pany the body to Nornstown where the train will arrive at 3 pm Genera Hancocks remains will be placed in the family vault Numerous military and civic societies have asked permission to form part of the funeral procession NOEEISTOWN Pa February 10A dispatch from Lieutenant Eugene Gulf fin of General Hancocks staff states that the funeral will positively take place here The date is not yet fixed but I but will probably be Friday Arrangements Arrange-ments for the interment are now in progress pro-gress A mass meeting of citizens wil be held this afternoon in the court house This is the home of General Hancocks childhood |
