Show Honoring Hancock WASHINGTON February 10The following fol-lowing general order was issued today WAB DEPABTHEST WASHINGTON Feb 9 1886 With profound sorrow the Secretary i of War announces to Usa army that J Major General Winfield Scott Hancock died today at Governors Island in the harbor of New York He was a soldier I withontfoar a citizen without reproach a patriot without guile He will ever be a noble and impressive fign1ejn our history and his countrymen will always recall with pride and pleasure his heroic and inspiring conduct con-duct during those last memorable hours on thegfleld of Gettysburg for his meritorious and conspicuous share in that great and decisive victorv he has received the gratitude of the American people and thanks of Congress Con-gress The flag will be placed at half mast at all military posts and stations and thirteen minute guns will be fired on the day after the receipt of this order and the usual badges of mourning will be worn for thirty days WILLIAM C ESDICOTT Secretary of War By Command of LieutenantGeneral Sheridan enantGeneral Sheridan will act auall bearer at General Hancocks funeral fun-eral MajorGeneral Schofield will also attend NOKBISTOWK Pa February 10The remains will be interred in the Generals Gener-als mausoleum Montgomery Cemetery Ceme-tery The cemetery can properly be termed the burial ground of the Hancock family The Generals brother John many years ago purchased the lot there in which lies the remains of his seven children The adjoining lot was purchased by General Hancock and his twin brother Hillary and in it they placed the remains re-mains of their parents By the side of the latter lies the body of Winfield S Hancock Jr the generals grandson and namesake who died when an infant in the summer of 1880 The news of his death reaching General Hancock the same day he was formally notified of his nomination for President In 1883 General Hancock built a handsome hand-some mausoleum The only member of the Generals immediate family now entombed in the mausoleum is his daughter Ada who died in 18 < |
