LONDON February 10The Standard this morning prints the report of an I interview with Hyndman Socialist leader He denied that the bad harvest I or overpopulation were the causes of tbe distress prevailing among the work iug people because similar social troubles trou-bles existed in America and France The real cause was universal that producers pro-ducers had no control over the amount paid for production Hyndman said that he and his associates would continue con-tinue to hold labor meetings and that there would soon be a demonstration of Easteud tradesmen for the purpose of agitating the subject of compensation The only law on the subject dates from the rein of Edward I and is difficult Jf application A meeting of West End tradesmen was held this evening tor the purpose ol giving expression to theirindignation at the want of confidence authorities for permitting the riot Mr W H Smith member of Parliamentpresided Mr Picketts stated that the loss caused by the noters amounted to 2000 Several members of Parliament addressed ad-dressed the meeting Mr Smith said sympathized with genuine distress He condemned however the present mode of agitation and appealed to workmen work-men to resent the interference of Socialists So-cialists as determined to their own interests In-terests He had said he had seen Mr Childers the Home Secretary and hau given him notice that he would question ques-tion the government on the subject in Parliament A resolution was adopted to send a memorial to the Home Secret Secre-t iry asking him to receive a deputation of tradesmen for a conference Mr Kelly Secretary of the Unemployed Workingmens Organization accused the Socialists of causing the recent trouble and lays part of the blame on the police officials who he said were perfectly aware of the intentions of the Socialists Mr Kelly on Monday distributed 0000 circulars among the workingmen urging peaceful proceedings He threatens threat-ens that unless the police proceed against the Socialists the workmen themselves will endeavor to punish them Kelly had his eyes blackened and was otherwise badly bruised in a fight yesterday The city is quiet tonight The Telegraph says that government intends to prosecute the more violent of the Socialist speakers who addressed the mob in Trafalgar Square The news of the riot has created a sensation in Europe The Socialists of Paris and Berlin are jubilant and meetings meet-ings lore being called in those cilioa to express admiration for London Socialists Social-ists and to encourage them to take further action The latest estimates place the damages dam-ages done in Mondays riot at 5000 All witnesses agree that the rioters were mainly ruffians of villainous looks and of the lowest order who moved time time announced for the assemblage over then and men were on the ground waiting to attend the meeting This crowd is being constantly augmented by accessions from Trafalgar Square Cavalry from Albany Barracks and large bodies of police have been ordered to remain in readiness to maintain order At the Cumberland meeting a movement was inaugurated to secure a meeting of all the London members of the House of Commons both Liberal and Conservative to devise measures for the immediate relief of the distress in London It is proposed to have the meeting depute a strong cjmmittee to urge the
