Show DRAMATIC AND LYRIC Mr Youngs Interesting letter let-ter on American Opera THE ORPHANS HOE BENEFIT FAlk n Mixed FIckle The Gnrnoz led Boyle Sncc ii General Gen-eral Notes C Tile American Opera CDJJ1pau To the Editor of Tns HZEALD The American Opera Company managed by Mr Charles B Locke has been the subject of both favorab e and I unfavorable comment the opinion expressed ex-pressed depending very mach npon the i point 9f vietf tah by the writer I J had received from the mtlsical press an unfavorable impression I and was therefore astonished to find that tho company was doing trcelleht artistic work in every respect > abd that among the numerous at lists engaged some are excellent and nearly all are good Itis no exaggeration to say that the management man-agement have succeeded in getting together to-gether a company in a few months that is equal to Mr Carl Rosas English Opera Company which it has taken years of labor to establish on its present footing The star system is entirely done away with The perfect rendering render-Ing of the whole work regardless the caprices of prime donne 01 tenoritis the aim of the management and in my opinion this object is more nearly realized than in any other operatic venture I ven-ture ever started in this country The chief improvement effected by this company over previous organizations organiza-tions is to be found in the splendid chorus and orchestra The latter is the celebrated Thomas Orchestra giving giv-ing such accompaniments under its renowned re-nowned leader as were never before heard in English opera Mr Thomas has proved himself as great in operatic as in symphonic work and shines especially in Wagners operas which are the supreme test of of a conductors genius The excellence of its chorus is dne to its material and to the instruction given it by Mr Heinricks who is an exceptional excep-tional musician in every respect and who substitutes Mr Thomas when necessary nec-essary The list of artists includes some well known singer and some that are newcomers new-comers Among the ladles there are some splendid voices whose possessors also have dramatic and musical talent The sopranos are all light however and this brings us to one of the chief wants of the company viz a dramatic soprano Miss Inch sings the soprano parts in the Flying Dutchman and Lohengrin with great intelligence and feeling but she seems to have worked too hard this winter Miss L Allemandhas asplendid physique phy-sique for a singer exceptionally good execution and considerable juoac 1 for and experiencein acting SheStudted in Pans and was coached in the part of Lakme which has been her chief success this winter by the composer himself The contraltos are very good indeed both in voice and style They include in their numbers Mme Jessie Bartlett Davis and Mme Heistreiter The former is well known in Salt Lake and is appreciated both for her beautiful beauti-ful her lyric talent The latter is the possessor of a magnificent voice that ought perhaps to be called a mezzo soprano of exceptional compass and power rather than a contralto The talent for the portrayal tragic characters ters is very great and her appearance almost as fine as her voice Among the male singers Mr Myron Whitney the great basso whose voice is as wonderful as ever is the most widely and favorably known Mr Ludwig the baitone from the Carl Rosa troupe is also a very fine singer and an exceptionally ex-ceptionally graceful and effective actor Mr Candidas the chief tenon it must be confessed is not so successful success-ful as could be wished He h san s-an excellent voice of telling quality but he uses his whole power constantly and thus misses many effects that his voice might easily reach The operas that I had the pleasure of witnessing were Lakme Plying Dutchman i Dutch-man Lohengrin and Merry Wives of Windsor Lakme wan first produced this country last winter by this company com-pany and has bee qne of UCcltet attractions Wives of Wfnosor by Nicole and Clocks Orriheas and Euri dyce have been very greatly patronized The next season will open in San Frad cisco about the beginning of October and the company will probably atop at Salt Lake on their return to New York The opera to be given here ought to be TheMtrryWives which is full of tune ful music and would no doubt b liked but the general repertoire of the company
