Show TH U 0 FOUNDRY BURNED A Six Thousand Dollar Blaze in Logan The following special was received by THE HELD early yesterday morning LOOAX May 1 JheU 0 Foundry machine shopsY wefe completely destroyed I des-troyed bY firefat oclock am des SaOOO No inaeraac4 Fire originated in a castfflg H k K Q Since the receipt of the foregoing the Logan Journal has come to hand and contains the following additional Dar ticulars O the disaster but 1 oclock this piormngMrChas Wilkes was passi g porntng Foundry when he noticed that a fire was burn ing in the machine shops near where the cupola Issues from the roof He immediately informed Mr Wm Birdno who lives near byand the twostarted off to give tbe alarm In a comparatively short time a crowd of men had gathered and every effort was made to save the foundry property The fire before longgained immense proportions and the fact was soon developed that no power could save the machine shop Attention was directed S di-rected toward the blacksmith shop which had taken fire on tbe east end art men stood on the roof and poured water on it even while the fire was I scorching their faces All the surrounding I sur-rounding buildings stacks etc were deluged with water by those present and thanks to their labor nothing else was destroyed Work was continued until far beyond daylight and citizens were startled this morning at seeing nothing but a few smoldering ruins where onco stood the Foundry machine shop There seems to be but one opinion as to how the blaze originated A run was made yesterday by the company the castings being left t cool and although Manager Goddard was at the building lt evening he noticed no-ticed nothing out of the way It U thought however that te fire originated in one of the casting HUSKS and spread t some surrounding timber as was the case upon an occasion Ion about two years ago the fire being put out before it had caused much damage The loss estimated a about i000 a great many valuable machines ma-chines castings patterns etc being burned It will prove a serious loss for the company who were hardly in circumstances cir-cumstances to be able to easily bear such a setback There was no insurance insur-ance upon the building Great credit i awarded those who were present for their effective labor among whom were Wm Peacock Henry Reese and Charles Wilkes The lack of a regularly organized fire company com-pany as well as some means of giving a loud alarm I greatly felt The Presbyterian byterian chapel bell was rung at the first alarm this morningawaTcening a number of men |
