i hymsel yes down with the expense of the suppoi of many wives and children It they were not im peled to do so by teachings or their religion re-ligion The repubicau the chic ppo nents oj tile twin relic but they can nnlj appreciate t e benefits of a higher mir when ipr dounds to their own advantage or e ratifies rat-ifies their own prejudic s and mtlice Al andtia Gazelle It is seldom our friends or enemies of the press put the Mormon question ii a clear light before their readers but the Gazette has presented the issue involved in the Mormon question in a single pM agraph but it is put in such a manner as will not be relished by the anti Mormons This Mormon question repeat re-peat an illustration that is so frequently fre-quently found in the history of tin human race of how it is that a certain line of action that makes men pure noble patriots in one generation may In the next regarded as making them arch traitors In 1857 the Dred Scott decision was rendered by which the highest tribunal i Known to our Jaws decided thatanegro I could not become a citizen of the United Stales by any process known to the Constitution And further declared de-clared that the Missouri compromise act and all other acts of Congress re striding slavery were unconstitutional I and that neither Congress nor tht local legislatures had any authority for restricting the spread of the institution of slavery The decision of the Supreme Court made of slavery a national institution in-stitution It is impossibre to conceive of a decision more emphatic in its character char-acter than this one made by the Supreme Court and delivered by Chief Justice Taney Now when the decision of this court was made known what did the people of the United States do Dio they say Well that decision puts the matter beyond all controversy we must submit to that decision It is the law we have no right to question it Easter to the trembling limbs of the black race the chains that we hoped to strike off Let slavery with all its attendant evil be established in all our States those which hitherto have been called free as well as those where slavery has beconu a settled institution for we have no right to oppose its spread neither have jur State legislatures nor Congress an right to interfere with it Is that what the people did When the courts decision de-cision was Announced in a political meeting in New York where Charles Sumner was speaking he stepped forward for-ward on the platform and exclaimed That being the decision of the Supreme I Court all we can say is there is a higher law than the Constitution Indeed In-deed that became the cry of the party opposed to slavery The decision of the Supreme Court made valid the fugitive slave law but did the people in what was known as the free States honor that law and carry it out No they received th fleeing slaves and helped them in their flight and hid them Irom the bloodhounds blood-hounds of the south and the still more heartless overseers and in every manner man-ner strove to render the infamous law ineffectual In what light do we regard the people who took that course Would we brand them as traitors Would we clamor for every political politi-cal franchise to b taken from them Or were they friends to humanity human-ity friends to the cause of human freedom free-dom the preservers of their country from the blighting effects of slavery even though to do it it became necessary neces-sary for them to oppose what had been declared a constitutional law of their country They have been and are still held in high esteem and it is their boast that they stamped out the decision deci-sion of that court though they had to do it in blood But now the Mormons talk of a higher law than one of Congress and they are tra tors It is impossible for a person holding such views to be a good Citizen they are told They are unworthy un-worthy tosit as jurors or to elect their own officers to manage their own affairs even to say nothing of taking any part in the affairs of the nation Is it only Republicans who can believe in a higher law than the Constitution and still retain re-tain their hold upon patriotism Have they a patent on the mysterious process pro-cess Why is it that a Republican can believe in a higher law than the Constitution Consti-tution and still remain a patriot while a Mormon Democrat cant believe the same doctrine without becoming a traitor trai-tor Will someone xplain |
