Show VICTORY ASTKEDICrED I In Friday issue of THE Hvi Ln I tiere apt caed a listof the bills which had been passed bi Congress during the session jst closed and which hav jnc received the approvinR ti natuie of the President have become laws oftbe land An fecamination Jot the li t falls to find among the new acts any special laws for Utah Before the session be pan we were told tbutt would not close without putting Into the books certain antiUtah Legislation Daring the first few months of toe session it was dinned into our ears that Congress was going to settle the hasty for Utah this time fpr certain The Senate under the leadersh p and dictation of ilephis topbcles jMmcads early in the lea ° Ion passed a very stringent bill almosfwith out reading it Many members did not know vrhatthe measure contained until it had passed beyond the control of that Chamber The violent antiMormons contributed to a fraud and sent a deL again to Washington to lobby for the bilL Mr Baskin the delegate referred to lias labored industriously for several sev-eral months past to induce the House to do something harsh against this Territory he has been assisted financially finan-cially and otherwise from this end 01 the line and nothing has been left undone un-done which it was belicred might help along the scheme planned against the peace prosperity and good order of community If ever an effort were made by the enemies of Utah to bulldoze bull-doze or coax Congress into providing the means for raiding the Territory as it had never been raided that effort was putforth ell during the eight months just ended During all this period THE TTgcATn which is recognized as the friend of Utah and the champion of the peoples gigots has never for a moment been nervous or anxious At the beginning of the cession it foretold he result when the infamous bill Prepared > pre-pared by Edmunds and by him rushed through the Senate left the upper house of Congress friends of the Serritory were exercised ond alarmed cud its enemies rejoiced and made merry THE HKBAU told the former to cheer up and not be alarmed and advised the latter to suppress sup-press their jellity as the bill would not be passed by the House and there would be no legislation against Utah If one will tate the time to run through the files of this journal for the past eight monthe he will learn that when thecnemy most gleeful over pros pro-s ve victory and matters on the surface appeared most gloomy THE HEEALD was cheerful and confident It never for a moment lost hope and could never firing itself tcr believe hat the American Congress would be guilty of committing the infamous crime against this helpless Territory which it was solicited to perpetrate It is matter mat-ter for congratulation that the outcome of the fall winter and summer campaign cam-paign is precisely what THE HERALDs HERALD-s d it would be This journal has aright a-right to congratulate itself and the people I peo-ple will rejoice that we were not mistaken mis-taken in an estimate of Congress put forth many months ago and clung toienacioudy in the laced frowning political aspect THE HEBU is today as satisfied that this Congress will pass no antiUtah laws as it was positive last winter that none of the many schemes for destroy fug this community would go through Congress during the session just closed In our opinion there is but one project which has a ghost of a show for success and that is the constitutional amendment amend-ment scheme and that the ratification of the proposed amendment will prove entirely bad for Utah we are not prepared pre-pared to believe Worse disasters might befall us especially as the amendment would necessarily be the stepping stone to the relegation of < < the problem to the tribunal which must finally adjust it namely the people Utah and her friends have cause to feel well pleased with the outcomeof the I winters work It is a grand triumph for the people and the victory is more to be prized because it has been won over the most powerful and desperate and determined opposition that has ever been encountered by the people of Utah In their struggle for the preservation preserva-tion of themselves their Territory |
