Show A D VEl TISEMENT SPEAKING OF MONEY , SENIOR-CniZEN POWER By Ezra T. Clark President of Davis County Bank A poet once wrote a limerick that al- vised: "If you hear a panther, don't a-i a-i lher." But there's one panther who i- sists on being heard-and who demans . some answers. She's Maggie ;g Kuhn of Philadel- , i i , f'hia. sparkplug of a I 1.500-member sen- 1 ior citizens organiza- I 1.- tion known as the 1 . 1 1 Cray Panthers. A great deal more is going to be herd i from people like Maggie Kuhn nd ! organizations like the Gray Pantlrrs. 0 because senior-citizen power is coring eIs j into its own. Todav. the average 60-ear- ! old can expect to live to age 77'2. Biore I 'he year 2.000. one in three Amecans ! will be 65 or older. More and mort the ! concerns and needs of these peopl will shape and influence the govemmet. the : economics, the lifestvle of the natioi At the opposite end of the ag Spec- trum. the birthrate has declined. Ilasn't '"o long ago thai it acluallv fell belw the "ro population level of 2.1 childin per J family, for the first time ever. Aierira 1 I "preached a negative birth rate. ) There's everv indication that tin birth "'c will hold steady. From the miketing Point of view, an increasingly largiohunk ' business will come from the rowing "umbers of senior citizens. Gods and rvices. largely oriented to youl in recent re-cent years, will undergo an apropriate sh"l of emphasis. I Education is already reacting to the population change. Courses are being especially developed for the over-30's, who are courted in the hope that they'll fill the classrooms built during the enrollment enroll-ment boom years. Colleges and universities will make many more changes to accommodate the older population as their numbers and influence in-fluence multiply. Certainly the economic impact of senior citizens will become more important. Social Security already issues checks in the amount of $5 billion a month. Not all of them are issued for retirement, but a good portion are. Since 19S0, Social Security payments have increased 168. Of course, many senior citizens have a hard time making ends meet. Many have to supplement their checks with part-time jobs. It's likely that there will someday be a new dependency on senior citizens in the labor market. Job opportunities will open ' up. especially in the service areas, where experience and know-how count as much as youthful vigor. Most mammals live to seven times their age of maturity. Man is an exception, averaging a lifespan of only about three times his age at maturity. But scientists speculate that, based on a mature age of 25. man might have the potential of living seven times that long-say 150 or 175 years. If that were to happen, today's senior citizen of 65 would be hardly more than wet behind the ears. But today's senior citizens-like Maggie Kuhn of the Gray Panthers-aren't waiting wait-ing for the future. They're talking, lobbying, lob-bying, voting. They're hard at work, insisting in-sisting that they be treated justly and with dignity. They deserve our thanks, because sooner or later all of us will join the ranks of the senior citizens-when we'll want the very same things.
