taxpayers of the city and residents upon or in the vicinity of those county roads of Salt Lake County which lead from the east end of Ninth South and are a continuatien of Ninth I and Eleventh East Streets asking that said roads be placed in good condition and for that purpose that I a proper and sufficient appropriation appropria-tion be made Referred to the com mi tte on streets and alleys A petition was submitted signed by William Ridd and twentyfour others citizens and tax payers of the Nineteenth Ward asking that Fourth North between Second and Sixth West streets be graded as it was almost impassable for children going to school and other pedestrians i pedes-trians Received and supervisorin structed to cause the wo k to be performed in the order of business A petition from H P Kimball and twentythree others tax payers of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Wards was presented requesting the Council to cause water mams to be laid pn East Temple from South Temple to First North streets to J I supply petitioners with water from the pipes for culinary purposes and as a protection against fire and agreeing to pay towards the improvement im-provement the sums set opposite to their respective names amounting In total to 1500 said amount to be applied on future water rates Referred to the committee on waterworks water-works John Wm Snell petitioned for the I right to purchase a certain piece of unimproved wild and mountainous mountain-ous land situated in the northeastern north-eastern portion of the city and more fully described in the petition and accompanying material mate-rial Granted under the usual restrictions re-strictions Henry Wagener petitioned to use a portion of the street and sidewalk in front of his premises in Commercial Commer-cial street upon which to pile brick during the period required in building build-ing Granted with the usual restrictions re-strictions A petition from Ephraim Bench was submitted representing that for the past three years he had been in charge of the artesian well works above the city cemetery and that during that time the progress of the work under his charge had been steady and continuous the depth attained at present being about 800 feet and the prospects favorable for ultimate success That though little lit-tle had been accomplished by his predecessor in the management of the works he having only sunk the shaft about fifty feet he nevertheless neverthe-less received for his services 5 a day while petitioner had never received re-ceived more than 8225 per day Wherefore and in consideration of the responsibility of the work etc the petitioner asked that his salary be increased to 8350 per day for future fu-ture services Granted Application for license to cirry on the business of retail department depart-ment to whom was referred the petition pe-tition of the firemen asking the Council to make tbeir compensation fifty cents per hour for actual service ser-vice etc reported that after carefully care-fully considering the arduous and dangerous nature of the duties required re-quired of the firemen for the benefit I of the public and at the risk of their lives night or day whenever the alarm was given they would je cominend appropriation of SOO per annum to be paid quarterly un der the direction of the chief engineer engin-eer of the department according to the labor performed which it was stated would be at the late of forty fire cents an hour reckoned on the basis of last years service Adopted The committee on water works to whom was referred the petition of the Utah Central Railway Company Com-pany asking permission to erect a water column six inches in diame ter to connect with a six inch pipe belonging to the waterworks system etc for tie purpos of supplying its tenders with waar reported recommending re-commending that the petition be granted provided that the outlet or spill shall not exceed two and one half inches in diameter the work to be done under the direction of the superintendent of water works A bill was presented from Sheeks Rawlins for legal services and was referred for investigation to the committee on claims A contingent appropriation was made for the payment of salaries for the current year of officers and employees em-ployees of the city the City Council the police force and the firemen the same to be drawn monthly except ex-cept in the case of the firemen whose compensation as per the report re-port of the committee on fire department de-partment was ordered to be dis bursed quarterly by the chief engineer en-gineer The city attorney was instructed to draft a bill for an odinance licensing li-censing and regulating billiard play ing and the keeping of pin alleys Adjourned for one week |
