Show The Defamation Case On Monday the case of the People against George H Carney for defamation de-famation of character the complaint being entered by M M Bane commenced com-menced before Commissioner Pearson Pear-son in the basement under the old Hussey Bank Building The prosecution prose-cution was represented by Judge Snow and Messrs Rawlins and Griffiths Woods and Hoffman appeared ap-peared for the defense Some five I witness were examined whose testimony testi-mony went to show that they had i not signed the circular which was carried about by Carney and which contaiued the alleged calumny They testified to being approached by Carney and said he gave as a reason for wishing them to sign the document that Bane had beaten him in some transaction and he proposed I pro-posed to get even The hearing will be resumed at 930 oclock this morning morn-ing and the indications are the examination will be a long one While considerable interest is manifested in the affair among a certain class it is only such as attaches at-taches to cases viewed as a fight among equally objectionable characters charac-ters and the only fear is that innocent inno-cent and decent people may be ropei into the disagreeable mess |
