Show THE DELEGATRJHIP I Clerk Adams of the4House of Rep reaentativesjtlka to the reporters and those who are curious b question him about his action in the Cannon Campbell case like an official who understood his business and was brave enough to do his duty He says he put Cannons came on the roll of the House of Representatives and would have done so had be known positively posit-ively that Mr Cannon was an un I naturalized Englishman Mr Adams had before him over the official certificate cer-tificate of the secretary of the Territory Terri-tory a statement of the vote for delegate del-egate to Congress There was no claim that the votes were fraudulent or that the election had been in ay particular illegal He clearly saw from the statement that more than 18000 votes had been cast for Mr Cannon and less than 1400 for Mr I Campbell and Mr Adams mathematics mathe-matics being better than those of the Utah executive and Mr Campbell Camp-bell he knew that Cannon had a very large majority of the votes and was duly elected Mr Adams cared a nothing for the bold attempt that was being made out here to steal the delegates del-egates seat and confer il upon a person per-son who would decidedly uninteresting uninter-esting and commonplace had it not been for a lucky mining find The great difference between the clerk of the House and the Utah executive consisted in thisthe former knew that it was none of his business whether Mr Cannon wa an American Ameri-can an Englishman or any other countryman while tae executive didnt know so much or if he did his action convicts him ot something some-thing a good deal worse than ignorance ignor-ance Whatever may be the outcome of this whole proceeding Mr Adams will have the consciousness of knowing know-ing that he was no party to a wicked attempt to nullity the moat valuable and what should be the most sacred principle of the American government govern-ment 4 George Q Cannon goes to Washington Wash-ington in the firm belief thai juitico will be O lUi lie its k wBtirlallf 1 t in the matter of the delegates seat for this Territory That belief is shared by the large majority of the Utah people and by all intelligent persons who understand the case and have faith in the honesty of Congress He goes there with the best wioheso ninetenths of the adult population of Utah who want him to represent them in Congress and who would feel that a grievous wrong had been perpetrated per-petrated were he to be denied the right to the seat to which he is entitled en-titled more clearly than any other congressman is entitled to bis seat if the regularity of elections and the majority of votes the number being about fourteen times that of his opponent op-ponent can figure in giving a representative repre-sentative the right to a Beat in Congress Con-gress The HERALD believes Mr Cannon wilt occupy the position to whioh he has been chosen and tbat i the grave crime sought to be committed com-mitted of depriving ther Territory of a representative in Congress will not be successful If Mr Campbell is not very foolishly throwing away his money in a vain effort to get into i a place for which he is in no manner qualified and which he could only get tbrocgh a great fraud we are mistaken in our estimate of the American House of Representatives |
