Show Sevilles Speech Washington 21 Scoville in part ft of his address on Monday said The jury should hate carefully the expert ex-pert witnesses hear their testimony and see how they stand the exam ination and correct their testimony and then come to the best conclusions conclu-sions they could arrive at The difficulty would come when the jury come to weigh the evidence of both sides The jury should then consider con-sider that the experts on the part of government were being paid S100 or S200 a day and that even these scientific men have not reached that height beyond the passion and feel ing and love of money so that these things could have no influence whatever what-ever on their feelings or their judg ments On the other hand not a single expert witness for the defense would be paid and their testimony testi-mony if in favor of the prisoner pris-oner would expose them to condemnation and ostracism in the community where they lived These were things to be taken into consideration in weighing expert testimony The popular feeling against the prisonerhad been shown in three separate attacks upon his life the last of them being commended com-mended by the newspapers all over the country That popular feeling feel-ing would also show itself in the testimony of expert witnesses Hecontrasted his own inexperience in criminal cases with the experience qnd ability of counsel coun-sel for the prosecution and in view of this disparity he asked the jury to be considerate and candid to the defense Still he did not ask for any odds when it came to questions pf fact He expected the defense would erect an impregnable wall and fortress which all the power of the other side could not shake If he came short in this he knew he could rely confidently on the courts learning integrity and sense of justice With the array of facts which he would present to the honest hon-est jury and the upright judge he felt that he was not entirely at a disadvantage |
