OPINION Washington 19 The Times commenting com-menting on the trial of Guitteau Bays The admiration and sympathy for the illustrious victim excited in Europe by President Garfields death are ho great to admit of much concern about the motives mo-tives and conduct of the criminal In America as in Great Britain same amendments in the conduct of criminal trials seems called for when a prisoner is denied hit free choice of advocates In both countries however the Judge may happily be trusted to supplement any deficiency on the weaker side The American nation neither desires to sacri fice a lunatic nor to be so facile in the acceptance of counterfeit evidence of disease dis-ease as to encourage wanton assassination assassina-tion The reports of Guitteaus trial excite the utmost ns oni hment among English lawyers that such continued violations ol decency are permitted in court nor do Englishmen understand how a criminal is allowed to communicate with the public pub-lic through the newspapers CHICAGO OPINION Chicago 29The shooting of Guitteau was a matter of almost universal comment com-ment on the streets this afternoon and tonight to-night and the remarkable fact is that mot staid and law abiding citizens are in their expressions of opinion on this point utterly lawless The prevailing sentiment senti-ment was one of regret that the bullet had not gone through to its intent Around the windows where bulletins were displayed people gathered in considerable consider-able numbers and occasionally a shout was heard as the news was read or commented com-mented on by a newcomer in a jocular strain The underlying feeling is that the fitting end of the assassin would be assassination BADLY SCARED Washington 19When the prison van reached the jail Guitteau was hurriedly riedly uebered out and conveyed to tho room of the warden where an examina tion was made H wa found that the I ball only caused the slightest abrasion of the skin Guilteau was terribly frightened fright-ened and scanned each new arrival as if dreading another attempt upon his life On reaching his cell ha begged the warden not to allow any strangers to see him during the night Soon after Guittohii returned to this cell Mr and Mrs Scpviile called and had a talk with him and later on his brother called The description given of the man who did the shooting was EO very meagre that the police had very little to work upon The alarm however was sent out and mounted police were instructed to scour the country and bring all suspicious characters The officer who patrols near the Solders Home finally saw a man answering the description that had teen sent out and cried out to him to halt He got a blast ot profanity in reply and the man rode uff aa tact as possible the policeman following lowing in hot pursuit The chase was continued beyond the District line and several shots were fired during its progress pro-gress The man finally disappeared in the vycods Tne officer then laid in wait for his man and he soon reappeared As he rode into the yard of a farmhouse he was overtaken Here the assailant W Jones by name was arrested and brought jack to this city He has been very reticent re-ticent ever since his arrest and the offi cers having him in charge will not communicate com-municate anything in regard to the pris oner It is reported however that Jones il another member of the great family of cranks and that he does not teem to realize that has done anything which is liable to involve him in serious difficulty Additional precautions will b9 taken hereafter to guard Guitteau from nesault when he is being conyeyei to and fro His condition tonight in described scribed as being one of abject fear and his appearance is said to be in strong contrast con-trast with that presented this morning in court when he gave public notice that he was secure from any attack contemplating contemplat-ing him physical harm ITcwinstead of being defiant he appeals piteously to be protected from further molestation and points to the fact that this is the third time his life has been attempted since he has bean imprisoned TOO UTTERLY AWFUL New To k 20 The effect of the explosion ex-plosion was the same on Guitteau as that which raw soldiers experience when they are for the first time under fire as he had to have a change of clothing en reaching the jail The Tribunes Washington says A police officer says Guitteau was terribly alarmed today when shot at Ho jumped about like a monkey What is the matter he cried Oh who shot that pistol 1 told him the officer had fired his pistol You know Eddie did fire at the man as he rode off I could not make Guitteau believe the officer firod He thought both shots were fired at him I Somebody is shooting at me he screamed and came nuar hit ting me He didnt know he was hit then You tell McElfret and Williams Wil-liams I want them to put on more force The evidence = of the prisoners fright were more apparent when he was taken 1 from the van Tho man that fired at Guitteau was arrested this evening about I 8 He is believed to be one Bill Jones of Queens Station a little hamlet within the limits of the District of Columbia He is a farmer and a hard drinker He rode away towarJ Blodenburg after firing the shot and is eaid to have told everybody he met he had shot Guitteau Of course there was no difficulty in following him He went to Bladensburg and had turned about when arrested He was taken to the second precinct station here and locked up Washington 20There were hundreds of visitors at the district jail today Religious Re-ligious services were held in the morning in the rotunda by representatives of various churches Guitteau was the attraction at-traction and throughout the day a crowd of anxious spectators being around the gate opening into a corridor in which is his cell Occasionally a party would obtain permission to pass through the corridor and view the prisoners in their cells including Guitteau Guards would engage Guilteau in conversation in reference to the attempt yesterday His invariable reply to the allusion was Oh yes I am hard to hit Paople will learn after a while that the Lord is with ma and will mot permit me to bo killed II The flesh wound oftvud by tie shot caused the primor I MB K 9 Sr neon veniencs whatever jlEflOMiats the t-he must have a atrong guard of policemen police-men tomorrow to assist the Lord in seeping him from danger This afternoon after-noon the crowd at the jail became eo great that ° Guitteau was notified by the warden that there was a large number of persons in the rotunda who desired to see him andhe had better step out into the corridor Guitteau immediately put on his coat and hat and brushing himself off appeared in i full view of everyone present Upon retiring he saluted the crowd in military style smiling in an indifferent manner as he did so The guards say he passed a quiet night talking but little He spends most of the time reading and writing The guards also say while he appears perfectly calm and composed yet he is greatly disturbed about tomorrow He is rot quite satisfied that he will escape violence There are various rumors in circulation in the eastern part of the city regarding attempts to shoot Guitteau Many believe concerted action hasbeen taken to kill him since the trial has begun be-gun The military guard is still on duty No apprehension is felt by officers of the jail of allY further attempts THE CRANKY AVENGER Wm Jones arrested on the charge of firing into the prison van in which Guit teau was being conveyed from the courthouse court-house to the jail with intent to kill him was taken to the Second Precinct police station about 9 last evening He was very drunk and unable to say much about the matter This morning he had become sober enough to Appreciate his position and at once took steps to secure counsel in the person of R K Elliott who will defend him in the police court tomorrow morning Visitors to the station house today ask Jones why he didnt hit Guitteau Jones laughed and said it wasnt I that shot him I want to see them prove it JJ So confident were the authorities last night that the right man had been secured secur-ed that no further search was made and it was not until five this afternoon that any officers on the van at the timo of the shooting were sent out to the police station sta-tion to identify the prhoner Police officer offi-cer Edlin who was sitting on the van with the driver and who fired at the horseman as he wheeled and fled rode out to the station house about five oclock After a thorough examination of Jo13 features and some conversation with him Officer Edlin said i Gentlemen Gentle-men that is notj the man I should know the man I fired at yesterday among a million 1 not only fail to identify this man Jones as the man but I could swear that he is not the man Officer Edlin then specified speci-fied the points of difference between team as follows Jones has a light complexion complex-ion with hardly a perceptible mustache whereas the man who fired at Guitteau was a dark swarthy man apparently about 45 years old with a very heavy stumpy black mustache and keen black eyes Besides the latter was cool and sober and the manner in which he planned and executed the work even though it failed was that of clearheaded determined man rather than of a half witted crank Again the horse was a heavy sorrel with white fore legs while Jones horse has not a white fleck upon it The authorities are pretty wall satisfied now from Officer Edlins statement state-ment that they have not got the right man as an interval of an hour and a half elapsed between the tim when the wouldbe avenger escaped from pursuing pursu-ing tbo van and the time when mounted officers firat sighted the eccentric Jones There is room for several theories now being advanced that the real culprit cul-prit made good his escape as he had ample time to do or that Jones after as he supposed having eluded his pursuers concluded to celebrate his exploit with a grand spree and strain that Jones was an accomplice to the extent of loaning his horse and that after receiving back the animal on the outskirts of the district and learning what had been done he was just drunk enough to enjoy the sport of being pursued by the police knowing he could not be held for the real criminal The now phase of the case creates a stir at police headquarters Jones is well known to the police Ho has been arrested several limes within the past six years He is 29 years old and ownes and operates a fine farm npon Bates road about three miles from the city He is regarded as a crank by his neighbors His chief trouble the past two years has been to personate a policeman police-man and make arrests and after making a show of taking a person to the station house to release him with a warning not to be cau offending againEeceatly he rode up to a carrage just entering the grounds of the Soldiers Home and compelled ihe driver to halt The occupants a gdntlo man and two ladies protested but with much severity of manner Jones called out This thing has been going on long enough You must go with me to the station house I have my orders to arrest you fJ Explanations being useless the party accompanied him to the station house Just as they were about to alight from the carriage however Jones laughingly bade them good day and putting spurs to his horse quickly disappeared dis-appeared Shortly afterward he arrested a woman and for this offense was fined He was never known to use or carry a revolver Those who know Jones intimately inti-mately say he is rather a half witted than a crazy man His demeanor today to-day indicates that he rather enjoys the notority he has secured Harry Carson colored guardsman at the rear of the van tonight positively identified i Jones as the horseman who followed the van to East Capitol and First streets where the shooting occurred Carson says when the van reached the capitol grounds Jones was pretty close behind and when they reached First street he rode past the rear end of the van Immediately he heard the pistol shot and then another but whether Jones fired the first shot he cant say as from his position in the van it was impossible to see what happened near the front part The police are impressed im-pressed tonight that Jones is tho man who fired at Guitteau notwithstanding the statement of Officer Edlin and the lack of positive identity on the part of Guardsman Carson ABBAICKJED Washington 21 aamg enough to haag rod t > at he ought to be hanged as a matter of justice anlpolicy createi considerable interest as HanailtoB is one of the most eminent authorities on nervous diseasw and is consulting physician to all the city insane in-sane asylums He says Guitteau belongs to a larger class of persons than most people suspect the existence He is a subject of the insane neurosis or insane in-sane temperament The outbreaks characterizing char-acterizing such a condition are largely the fault ef the socalled patient though of course there is heredition from nervous ner-vous ancestors This matter of insane platonic is cue of a wide bearing which deserves more attention from physcians aid from fathers than it has yet received It manifests itself in different ways In ninetynine cases oufcof 100 it leads people peo-ple to nothing more than the harmless eccentricity of hypochondria and frequently fre-quently Is never noticed at all unless by some physician
