Show The GrantPerter Afiair New York 4ThB Suns Washington Washing-ton correspondent eays of the Grant Porter affair One senator f aid today he did not believe tbo correspondence would change a republican vote Democrats Dem-ocrats are of course in a compacent mood over their eleventh hour convert It is said however that they will hold him strictly to terms and it is even stated that the two bills toput Grant on the retired list and restore Porter will be openly linked together and put upon their passage in this shape Logan is reported re-ported to be in a somewhat belligerant frame of mind and to hold that for his part he proposes to figbt the restoration to the end whatever becomes of the Grant amendment New York 5 The Graphic correspondent corres-pondent says General Grants declaration declara-tion that he has become convinced that an injustice was done Fitz John Porter < promises to cause a reopening of the case General Logan who was the leader of opposition to Porter in th Senate was asked today whether he too had changed his mind oa the subject He said decidedly that he bad not He remarked re-marked that he had nothing to say about Grants opinion and conclusion but for himeelfj he had spent months studying it and he bad reached the conclusion that Porter had not been unjustly dealt with to say the least He did not expect to change his mind and if the case was reopened re-opened he should again oppose the restoration res-toration of Porter to the army as be had done in the psst He was Eorry Grant expressed the opinion he had but it could riot affect his opinion Chicago 5 Washington special General Gen-eral Logan and Sherman are much embarrassed em-barrassed because of Grants change of heart on the Porter matter Grant has written to Arthur on the matter |
