Show Brewstor and Henry Washington 29The department of justice today made public a copy of the interview between Attorney General Brewster and District Marshal Henry held at the formers office on tine 2d last immediately after the drawing for jurors to serve in tho star route case in which the attorney general interrogated the marshal at length as to tbe qualifications qualifica-tions of men so elected as talesmen In responsa Mar hal Henry said he gave directions di-rections to the bailiff get good repu able a-ble citizens and supposed they were such Brewster took the marshal to task for not selecting the men himselt and informed in-formed him that it vaa his duty to have done EO During the convocation the conversation the attormey general told thi marshal that he wished him and everybody else to understand that the government does not want a conviction unjustly obtained It wants fair ply and will have it The attorney general then questioned the marshal about Dor seys capture at his office of which fact Henry denied all knowledge and insisted that he and his men had clean hands in tho matter Brewster charged Henry with picking up men on the streets for talesmen whereupon Henry retorted that he had done his duty and was as anxious for a fair trial as any one and that if any failures had been made they had been made through ignorance and not design In closing the interview the marshal said he challenges an investigation inves-tigation In reply Attorney General Browater remarked that if they are acquitted ac-quitted by twelve responsible men I will rejo ce if one man holds out against eleven the people will say how came that the jury to be put in that condition This thing f jury fixing I will not tolerate tol-erate |
