Show t SUNDAY SERVICES The services in the Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon were opened by the choir singing the hymn on page 147 0 Gcd our help in ago past Oar hope for years to come Oar shelter from the stormy blast And our eternal home Prayer by Bishop E F Sheets The choir sang the hymn beginning begin-ning While of tbo e emblems wo partake In Jesus name and for his sake Let u > remember and bo sure Our hearts and hands are clean and pure ELDER YILLL43FCTHERIhGIIAD addressed the congregation concerning con-cerning the early history of the church of Christ He said that those who had studied the scriptures understood un-derstood that Jesus endeavored to establish the gospel among the Jewish Jew-ish people but they rejected him and put him to death for which the Lord hao since punished them Jesus had told them that becauseof their rejection of him the gospel should be taken from them and given to another n nation meanimr the Gentiles This promise was also fulfilledbut in thecourse of lime the Gentiles fell away from the gospel It had also been predicted that the kingdom of God should be set up at some future time never again to be thrown dov n The elder traced briefly the history of the various oriential religionsand that they were all in a sense designed to workout work-out the purposes of God all being preparatory to the establishment the gospel in these latter days Finally God through Joseph Smith had set up his gospel in this age to prepare for the second coming of Christ as had been foretold Before the Savior could come the rule of the land must prevail on earth as it does in heaven To that end the saints were laboring under the direction di-rection of the Master The work was progressing satisfactorily and would continue until the purposes of God were all accomplished ELDER GEORGE ROMNET next addressed ad-dressed the congregation briefly He said the saints were living at at important im-portant epoch of the worlds history and they occupied a prominent position po-sition among the people of the world They ought to be thankful for the blessings that have been conferred upon them by the Almighty Al-mighty and should be faithful to that which had been revealed to them and to the covenants they have made A great work devolved upon them and they could only perform per-form it by faithful and continuous effort There was a great reward for all who kept the commandments command-ments of God but only through faithfulness could the reward be obtained Each was rewarded according ac-cording to his works in the fleshand each mustwork his own salvation salva-tion When we realize the blessings that are in store for the f aithf ulhow earnest we should be to be pure and upright before God keeping all his commands I He pitied those who had once enjoyed the spirit of the gospel but had through negligence negli-gence or sin lost it the darkness dark-ness of their minds was much more dense than before they had the light In order to obtain the blessings that had been promised the saints must obey all the gospel no one principle being sufficient to save a person He exhorted all to live lives of faithful Latterday Saints in everything = every-thing being pure in heart and upright up-right in their conduct i ELDER JOHN MORGAN followed with a brief discourse on the principles prin-ciples of the gospel and the importance import-ance of the same not only to the saints but to the whole world The choir sang an anthem and Patriarch W J Smith pronounced the benediction |
