Show HERE is something for railroad managers and presidents to think over It was reported at the recent meeting of the New York New Haven Hadford Railroad Co that farps were reduced to two and a half cents per mile in 1880 that 1882 was the first full year of the reductionand that the dividends of the company were nearly 12J < per cent It was shown that the passenger receipts had increased over 1044000 or over 44 per cent in excess of the same receipts in 1879 which was the last year of the higher rates The increase for 1881 was 701101 or over 30 per cent It is not claimed that low passenger rates alone made this increase for the natural growth of the business and the country would account for some of it but unquestionably low fares had considerableto do with it |
